Ìý Psychoanalytic treatments may be necessary when other treatments are ineffective. An empirically grounded framework for the use of these treatments involves sources of evidence from both efficacy and effectiveness studies. Preliminary evidence suggests that psychoanalysis appears to be consistently helpful to patients with milder disorders and somewhat helpful to those with more severe disturbances. A greater number of controlled studies are necessary to confirm these impressions. A multisite process and outcome study is proposed.
