The Encyclopedia of Skin and Skin Disorders, 2nd ed

Arch Dermatol. 2003;139(9):1226. doi:10.1001/archderm.139.9.1226-a

Under the perspicacious guidance of Dover, Turkington has produced a revised version of this standard work. The Encyclopedia of Skin and Skin Disorders now has over 1000 entries, covered in variable but appropriate depth. Recently approved medications, surgical procedures, and cosmetic dermatologic interventions are among the new additions. The alphabetical organization, perhaps the most useful feature of this book, is retained and ensures that this new information is easily retrievable.

While targeted to the intelligent novice, this book can be useful to dermatologists as well. Not only can it be a paper teleprompter to answer patient questions, but it is also fun to peruse. Looking at the "C" section, how many dermatologists know that clay is a "mineral used in body powder, face masks, and foundations that is particularly helpful for normal and oily skin" or the precise composition and legal basis of the "Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR)" expert panel initiated by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association in 1976?
