As a clinical dermatologist, I enjoyed reading this magnificent book edited by Stephen K. Tyring and Angela Yen-Moore, with contributions from 29 renowned experts. The title of the book itself, Mucocutaneous Manifestations of Viral Diseases, reflects the ambitious task and tremendous challenges faced by the authors. They set out to present a complete, organized review of the topic in an easy-to-read, well-illustrated reference book with high-quality color photographs showing clinical signs of all known pertinent viral processes! The result is a unique resource for internists, dermatologists, pediatricians, and family practitioners worldwide. The chapters do not merely encompass the diagnosis, treatment, and pathogenesis of viral disorders; they also provide epidemiological data, as well as differential diagnoses that educate on other viral maladies, infectious and noninfectious. The chapters also outline a brief taxonomy and history of each disease, with well-illustrated alterations of skin cells and tissue; describe the most useful and up-to-date laboratory techniques to assist in the diagnosis; and emphasize the latest preventive methods, vaccines, and antiviral therapies. I found the comprehensive tables and user-friendly graphics a great asset for summarizing epidemiological and geographic data. All 23 chapters have an extensive current bibliography for users who wish to search into the primary literature. The book includes many viral diseases newly recognized in remote areas of the earth. Given the current facts of travel and social exchange, these diseases could suddenly become a real diagnostic consideration at any physician's office around the world. I highly recommend this authoritative reference book that doubles as a photographic atlas.
