Incorrect ICD-9 Codes and Percentages

JAMA Cardiol. 2017;2(2):230. doi:10.1001/jamacardio.2016.5452

In the Original Investigation by Kim et al titled “Hospital Volume Outcomes After Septal Myectomy and Alcohol Septal Ablation for Treatment of Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: US Nationwide Inpatient Database, 2003-2011,” published online April 27, 2016, and also in the June 2016 print issue of JAMA Cardiology,1 the incorrect International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes were used for septal myectomy (36.33) and septal ablation (36.34). The following codes should have been used: 37.33 (excision of heart tissue) and 37.34 (ablation of heart tissue).

These errors affected some of the percentages reported in Table 1 and Table 2. In Table 1, the correct numbers and percentages should have been as follows: 509 (10.7%) for uncomplicated diabetes in the third tertile; 178 (31.1%), 262 (24.8%), and 857 (18.0%) for concomitant coronary artery bypass graft in the first, second, and third tertiles, respectively; 289 (50.5%), 611 (57.9%), and 2280 (47.9%) for concomitant valve surgery in the first, second, and third tertiles, respectively; 528 (50.0%) and 1918 (40.3%) for Medicare in the second and third tertiles, respectively; and 504 (10.6%) for medium hospital bed size in the third tertile. In Table 2, the correct number and percentage was 64 (10.4%) for anemia in the second tertile. This information has been updated.2 This article was corrected online.
