Though the COVID-19 pandemic may seem a generation removed, it is only 4 years hence, and this brief window is hardly sufficient to answer all the natural history questions or fully address lessons learned for the next outsized public health emergency. We remain perplexed by the long-term sequelae, search for effective adjunctive treatment strategies in addition to public health measures and vaccines, and recognize the profound impact of adverse social determinants of health and resultant social vulnerability on public health crises.1,2 We continue to treat many with COVID-19 infection, less so in pandemic mode and more so in endemic mode. Exiting our postpandemic investigational mindset too soon leaves us ill prepared and underinformed for the future.
