GENERATIONS. GRACIAS A DIOS TAMBIÉN. BUENO. BUENOS DIAS. IT’S A FAMILIAR SIGHT, LAURA GUTIERREZ WELCOMING THE ELDERS AS THEY SETTLE IN FOR THEIR MORNING COFFEE AND BREAKFAST AT THE UNITED COMMUNITY CENTERS. ADULT DAY CARE. BUENOS DIAS. COMO ESTAS VERDAD? AS THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, IT’S NOT PART OF HER JOB DESCRIPTION, BUT IT’S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF HER DAY. BECAUSE IT’S. YEAH, YOU HAVE TO GIVE BACK. YOU KNOW, THIS IS YOUR CALLING. YOU. YOU WALK THE PATH, YOU KNOW THE JOURNEY. YOU GOT THIS. THREE YEARS AGO, SHE RECEIVED THE CALL TO LEAD THIS PILLAR OF THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY ON MILWAUKEE’S SOUTH SIDE AS THE FIRST WOMAN CEO. IF YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED ME WHAT MY TRAJECTORY WAS AS IT WAS NOT HERE, BUT FOR GUTIERREZ, THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A JOB. AS A KID, I CAME HERE FOR PROGRAMING MY PARENTS WERE TAKING ENGLISH CLASSES AND AT THAT TIME, BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, IT WAS JUST KNOWN AS THE SPOT. IN THE LATE 60S. THE SPOT WAS JUST A SMALL TAVERN AT THE CORNER OF SIXTH STREET. IT SERVED AS A HOME AWAY FROM HOME FOR GUTIERREZ AND HER FAMILY, WHO IMMIGRATED FROM GUADALAJARA, MEXICO, IN SEARCH OF THEIR AMERICAN DREAM. I KNOW WHAT MY FAMILY NEEDED. I KNOW WHAT THE COMMUNITY NEEDS BECAUSE I SPEAK WITH THEM. AND SO I WILL TURN EVERY STONE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE PROVIDING THE SERVICES THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL. NOW YOU SEE ALL THE COLLEGE PENDANTS. THERE’S ACTUAL ACADEMIC PIECES, RIGHT NOW. THE ORIGINAL SPOT SITS IN THE FOUNDATION OF UNITED COMMUNITY CENTER’S BASEMENT, PROPPING UP THE HUB FOR FUTURE LEADERS IN THE GROWING HISPANIC COMMUNITY. I THINK WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH OUR HALLS AND HEAR THE CHILDREN AND SEE THE SERVICES AND SEE THE PASSION AND DEDICATION OF OUR EMPLOYEES, YOU WILL FEEL AT HOME

Three years ago, she received the call to lead this pillar of the Hispanic community on Milwaukee's south side as the first woman CEO.

But for Gutierrez, this is more than just a job.

"As a kid, I came here for programming. My parents were taking English classes, and at that time, back when I was younger, it was just known as The Spot," Gutierrez said.

In the late '60s, The Spot was just a small tavern at the corner of Sixth Street.

It served as a home away from home for Gutierrez and her family, who immigrated from Guadalajara, Mexico, in search of their American dream.

"I know what my family needed. I know what the community needs because I speak with them. And so I will turn every stone to make sure that we are providing the services they need to be successful," Gutierrez said.

Right now, the original "Spot" sits in the foundation of the United Community Center's basement.

"I think when you walk through our halls and hear the children and see the services and see the passion and dedication of our employees, you will feel at home," Gutierrez said.
