Why a Tom Brady rookie card just sold for an eye-popping amount

It's now highest-priced football card sold at auction

It's good to be Tom Brady: He won yet another Super Bowl this year, he's 41 years old with no immediate plans to retire, he just celebrated his 10-year wedding anniversary to Gisele Bündchen, and, this week, his rookie card sold at auction for a record-setting $400,100."This auction event featured the finest football card we've brokered in our 20-year history and achieved the highest-ever hammer price for a football card," said Brett Huigens, the CEO of PWCC Marketplace, which conducted the auction along with eBay Inc. Here's what you need to know about the card, the auction and whether you should ask your parents to send you all those old trading cards. What kind of card is it? It's a signed card that's part of the 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket collection, according to ESPN. Who bought it?That's unclear right now, but; Sports Collector's Daily reported that Evan Mathis, a former NFL lineman and card collector, is believed to have owned the card at one point. Why is the card worth so much? It's super rare and in very good condition. Only 100 copies of the Brady card were produced, according to Beckett, which grades collector's cards. The card received a grade of nine out of 10 from Beckett Grading Services, making it only one of two Brady rookie cards with that high a grade. PWCC said it was the "highest quality specimen" card it had ever sold at auction and "pack fresh." How much are cards like this actually worth?Huigens said in a statement that the "trading card market is rapidly maturing among tangible asset investors and record prices are becoming increasingly frequent, especially among the market's most desired issues."In other words: There's a desire for high-quality sports cards, and they're fetching high prices. In fact, a rare Michael Jordan card just sold for $350,100. But to really make money, you're going to need a rare card in mint condition. Your scuffed and dusty Danny Wuerffel rookie card with the bent right corner is probably worth very little. Sorry.
