Vinyl Cup Records expanding to new location, celebrating Beaverdale roots
vlog EIGHT NEWS AT SIX. A KEY LOCATION IN THE HEART OF DES MOINES BEAVERDALE NEIGHBORHOOD HAS A NEW TENANT ON THE WAY. VINYL CUP RECORDS WILL TAKE OVER THE SPOT THAT WAS HOME TO ANOTHER POPULAR BUSINESS FOR 51 YEARS. vlog’S MARCUS MCINTOSH SHOWS US WHY A MOVE OF JUST A FEW BLOCKS COULD GIVE VINYL CUP RECORDS A LOT MORE VISIBILITY. VINYL CUP RECORDS IS DEFINITELY OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN BEAVERDALE. VERY LITTLE SIGNAGE. YOU HAVE TO GO UP A FLIGHT OF STAIRS AND AROUND THE CORNER TO FIND THE BUSINESS, BUT A PLANNED MOVE WILL PUT THIS BUSINESS IN A PRIME LOCATION. VINYL CUP RECORDS OPENED THIS SMALL SPACE BACK IN 2018. IT HAS A LOYAL CUSTOMER BASE AND DOES WHAT IT CAN TO STAND OUT IN THE CROWD. WE PARTNER WITH AN ARTIST OR A LABEL, AND THEN WE HAVE A LIMITED RELEASE THAT YOU CAN ONLY GET FROM OUR RECORD STORE. VINYL CUP IS TAKING THOSE IDEAS AND ITS CUSTOMERS TO THE OLD BACK COUNTRY LOCATION ABOUT THREE BLOCKS AWAY. THE MOVE MEANS MORE VISIBILITY AND MORE SPACE. IT ALSO MEANS THE VINYL CUP LOCATIONS IN OMAHA AND CEDAR FALLS WILL CLOSE. IT IS ROUGHLY 5000FT, AND WE’RE AT 3500 FOR THE STORES COMBINED, SO STORAGE IS HUGE. BUT ALSO WE’RE GOING TO HAVE MORE RETAIL SPACE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS. EARL, THE STORE MASCOT, WILL CONTINUE RESTING IN THE STACKS OF RECORDS. THEY WILL ALSO CONTINUE DOING WHAT HAS MADE THEM A POPULAR RECORD STORE NATIONWIDE. I WAS AT A SHOW IN KENTUCKY AND I HAD A VINYL CUP HAT ON, AND A GUY CAME UP TO ME AND HE WAS LIKE VINYL CUP RECORDS, LIKE, YOU KNOW THAT GUY? AND I SAID, I AM THAT GUY. THOUGHTS OF MOVING TO A BIGGER SPACE STARTED WHEN BACK COUNTRY ANNOUNCED IT WAS CLOSING AFTER MORE THAN FIVE DECADES. THERE WAS NEVER A THOUGHT OF LEAVING BEAVERDALE. THIS IS HOME FOR US, AND IT WAS NEVER OUR GOAL TO EXPAND AS MUCH AS WE HAD. IT WAS ALWAYS MY GOAL TO HAVE A BIG STORE. VINYL CUP RECORDS WILL MOVE INTO THE OLD BACK COUNTRY LOCATION HERE IN THE HEART OF BEAVERDALE, IN LATE MAY OR EARLY JUNE IN DES MOINES. MARC

Currently tucked away with minimal signage and located upstairs, the store has built a loyal customer base and stands out with outside-the-box thinking.

"We partner with an artist or a label, and we have a limited release that you can only get from our record store," Dickens said.

The move will take them to the former Back Country location, about three blocks away.

As a result of the relocation, the Omaha and Cedar Falls locations will close, consolidating the focus back to Beaverdale.

Despite the changes, the store plans to keep its core charm intact. Earl, an Australian Shepherd, the beloved store mascot, will continue to be a store fixture.

Dedication to maintaining their identity has helped Vinyl Cup achieve national recognition.

"I was at a show in Kentucky. Had a Vinyl Cup hat on. A guy come up to me and he was like, 'Vinyl Cup Records! Do you know that guy?' I am that guy," Dickens said.

The decision to move came after the announcement of Back Country’s closure after more than five decades in business.

Staying in Beaverdale was non-negotiable for Vinyl Cup.

"This is home for us," Dickens said.

The move is expected to take place in late May or early June.
