Bringing Val Air Ballroom back to life: Check out $15M renovation
vlog. EIGHT NEWS AT FIVE. WELL, CREWS ARE ALMOST DONE BRINGING AN 80 YEAR OLD BUILDING BACK TO ITS FORMER GLORY. THE ALMOST $15 MILLION RENOVATIONS AT THE VAL AIR BALLROOM WILL BRING IT BACK TO ITS FORMER GLORY. AND ADD MORE MODERN AMENITIES. vlog’S MARCUS MCINTOSH GOT A LOOK INSIDE BEFORE. THE BIG REVEAL. THIS IS THE HISTORIC VALLEY BALLROOM. FOR A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR, IT’S BEEN IN THE PROCESS OF AN HISTORIC RENOVATION. ONE THE PUBLIC WILL SEE FOR THE FIRST TIME WHEN THEY OPEN THEIR DOORS ON SUNDAY. SAM SUMMERS BOUGHT THE PROPERTY IN 2022, WHILE THE BONES OF THE BUILDING ARE INTACT, HE. KNEW THERE WAS A LOT OF WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. I’M GOING TO USE THE ANALOGY OF TAKING A BUILDING AND TURNING IT UPSIDE DOWN AND SHAKING AND THEN PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER, BECAUSE THAT’S REALLY WHAT WE DID HERE. ISSUES IMMEDIATELY ADDRESSED INCLUDE INSTALLING A NEW HVAC SYSTEM BECAUSE THE OLD SYSTEM OFTEN LEFT THE CROWD HOTTER THAN THE PERFORMER. THEY PAID TO SEE THE AIR CONDITIONING UNITS ARE THE SIZE OF SMALL SCHOOL BUSSES, YOU KNOW, FOR THE FOR JUST THE FLOOR. AND AND SO IT’S ABOUT GETTING OUT THAT AIR WHEN YOU HAVE THIS MANY PEOPLE IN. WE WENT FROM SOMETHING LIKE 60 TONS OF AIR CONDITIONING TO 240 SOUND THAT HAD PREVIOUS OWNERS AT ODDS WITH THE NEIGHBORS WAS ADDRESSED BY THESE NEW CEILING TILES, SOMETHING THEY TESTED OUT BY PLAYING LOUD MUSIC. WE DROVE AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOODS, YOU KNOW, THAT WAS A GOOD DAY WHEN WE COULDN’T HEAR IT IN WATERBURY AND WE COULDN’T HEAR IT OVER HERE. MORE BATHROOMS HAVE BEEN ADDED. THE LIGHTING ON THE STAGE WAS COMPLETELY REDONE, AND THE STAGE WAS RAISED IN ORDER FOR EVERYONE IN A CAPACITY CROWD OF 2500 TO SEE THE STAGE. DURING THE RENOVATION, HE DISCOVERED A GEM, HAD DRYWALL OVER IT. IT’S AN OLD PHONE BOOTH THAT WE UNCOVERED. THE INTEGRITY OF THE WOOD FLOORS IS INTACT, AND THEY NOW HAVE THE TOOLS TO KEEP THE BUILDING CLEAN. I MEAN, IF I GO TO A CONCERT LIKE I WANT CLEAN BATHROOMS, I WANT TO SIT IN A CLEAN CHAIR VERY IMPORTANT THINGS THAT THAT YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT WHAT SUMMERS IS THINKING ABOUT IS FINISHING TOUCHES THAT WILL BE COMPLETE BY SUNDAY. SOFT OPENING FROM 12 NOON UNTIL FOUR IN THE AFTERNOON. THE FREE EVENT WILL INCLUDE AN EFFORT TO BREAK A GUINNESS RECORD AND AN OPEN JAM IN WEST DE

Bringing Val Air Ballroom back to life: Check out $15M renovation
A historic live music and entertainment venue in West Des Moines is almost ready for a new season of shows. For the past 13 months, new owner Sam Summers and his team has been renovating the property, which has housed a ballroom and concert hall since the 1930s. "I'm going to use the analogy of taking a building, turning it upside down and shaking it then putting it back together," said Summers, who bought the Val Air in January 2022 and closed it a few months later to start renovations. The work, which cost nearly $15 million, includes a new sound system and material on the ceiling and roof to keep loud music in, instead of letting it echo through the neighborhood, which has conflict with neighbors through the years. The stage lighting system was replaced, the stage was raised, the HVAC was fortified and more bathrooms were added. And the original wood floor was refinished. With a few final touches, the renovation should be complete by this weekend."To be able to be proud of the place I am having the bands play. Putting them in a place where I know they will come back. I think that's what feels really great to me," Summers said. There is a soft opening, billed as a sneak peek at the renovated property, this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. It's free and will include backstage tours, live music and an attempt by local bassist Jon Locker to set a world record by playing through 80 amplifiers at once. Summers and Val Air already have more than two dozen events booked this year — including Greensky Bluegrass on Feb. 29, the first show after the "sneak peek."
