Trump vows to restore law and order at Justice Department
President Donald Trump spoke at the Justice Department Friday, promising to end corruption — something he claimed was at the heart of his now-dismissed federal indictments. He also vowed to restore what he called law and order in the agency.See part of the speech in the video above"We're turning the page on four long years of corruption, weaponization, and surrender to violent criminals," Trump said. "They weaponized the vast powers of our intelligence and law enforcement agencies to try and thwart the will of the American people. We will expel the rogue actors and corrupt forces from our government. We will expose and very much expose their egregious crimes and severe misconduct," Trump said.Political analysts say Trump is looking to send a message, as he has said, without evidence, that former President Joe Biden used the department as a weapon against him."He wants to send the message that the Justice Department is now focused on crime, as it should be," said Marc Sandalow, a political analyst. "Ironically, he is the one who has been very open about getting his own politics involved with the Department of Justice."Since returning to power, Trump has installed close allies and hired members of his personal defense team. He has also fired department employees who served on the team that charged him for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election and for his handling of classified documents."The people assigned to go after the Jan. 6 protesters have been fired or demoted," Sandalow said. "The people who put some of his aides in jail, Steve Bannon and Pete Navarro, those people have been reassigned or fired."Trump is the first president to speak from the agency in more than a decade. Political analysts say that it rarely happens as, historically, the Justice Department looks to maintain its independence.
