About 1,500 people perish after the ship sinks into the chilly North Atlantic.1865: President Abraham Lincoln dies in Washington, D.C., just hours after being shot by John Wilkes Boothe at Ford's Theater. Vice President Andrew Johnson succeeds Lincoln in the White House. 1947: Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American player in Major League Baseball. His debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers shatters baseball's decades-old color barrier. April 15 is celebrated as "Jackie Robinson Day," where all players, coaches, managers and umpires wear Robinson's jersey number, 42, in his honor.1986: The U.S. launches an air raid against Libya in response to the bombing of a disco in West Berlin, Germany. Libya says 37 people, mostly civilians, are killed in the raid. 1998: Cambodian Communist revolutionary leader Pol Pot dies.
