The Crown has finally cast its Prince Philip. After months of rumors, which ranged from Hugh Laurie to Paul Bettany, Deadline that Tobias Menzies has signed on to play the Queen's husband, the Duke of Edinburgh
Menzies won't be the only newcomer on the set. With the show covering approximately a decade of the Queen's life per season, the characters age faster than the actors who play them, and creator Peter Morgan has opted to completely recast the show with slightly older actors every two seasons, rather than rely on age makeup and prosthetics.
"They're getting rid of all of us," Claire Foy told in December of last year. "After two seasons, that's it, I'm gone."
Menzies will take over the role from Matt Smith. Thus far, only one other cast member, Olivia Colman, who will be stepping into Claire Foy's footsteps, has been confirmed. Helena Bonham Carter is rumored to be playing the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret.
Menzies is no stranger to period dramas. He's currently starring in The Terror, a supernatural thriller set in the 1840s on an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage to China. He is perhaps best known for his dual roles of Frank and Black Jack Randall on Outlander.
