Tide responds to criticism regarding new packaging
Following the social media craze known as the , in which teens consumed laundry detergent for fun, Tide has created new packaging that looks exactly like a box of wine.
According to Tide's parent company, Procter & Gamble, the "Tide Eco-Box" is a cardboard box that comes with sealed bag of ultra-compacted Tide liquid laundry detergent. The new packaging is meant to make it easier for Tide to be shipped through the company's e-commerce partners, like Amazon, Walmart and other partner sites, and is eco-friendly because it uses 60 percent less plastic than a regular 150 oz. bottle.
"The Tide Eco-Box is designed to keep the convenience of online shopping for the consumer, but reduce the overall impact of that convenience on our environment," Isaac Hellemn, brand manager for e-commerce innovation in P&G’s Fabric Care group, said in a statement.
Some are even going as far as to question how teens are supposed to avoid the temptation of pouring themselves a shot of the purple liquid (as displayed in the promotional image) if they ate Tide pods because they looked like gummies?
In response to the controversy, Procter & Gamble told , "We all know laundry detergent is for cleaning clothes. To be sure people know this is detergent, we put a large picture of our Tide bottle on the side of the box. Whether your Tide comes in a box or a bottle, it should be stored up and away, out of the reach of children."
