Jessica Gaudian was 28 weeks pregnant when she suddenly went into labor at home in West Des Moines.
"I laid on the floor," she said, detailing the unexpected delivery on March 16. "My water broke, and as soon as my water broke, it was four pushes and I was holding her head."
It took just minutes. And there they were on the bathroom floor, baby and mother. Baby Clara Elizabeth weighed just 2 pounds, 7 ounces.
A 911 audio recording reveals a calm dispatcher walking Jessica's husband, Alex Gaudian, through what to do before West Des Moines emergency responders arrived.
"They were calm, and they knew what they were doing," Alex said. "There wasn't any question."
West Des Moines EMS Lt. Jordan VanScoy was the first medic to run into the bathroom and swoop baby Clara into his arms.
"With baby being so small, we were kind of worried about her lung development and also making sure she stays pretty warm," VanScoy said. "At that age, they are not able to regulate their temperature well."

VanScoy transported Clara safely to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, where the neonatal intensive care unit team took over.
At 6 weeks old now, Clara is stable and growing.
"Not everyday we get those kind of outcomes," VanScoy said. "So those are the kind of outcomes that make us keep coming back."
VanScoy is the pediatric emergency care coordinator for West Des Moines EMS.
"In EMS, about 7% of our annual call volume is pediatric. So because of that, we don't see them every day," he said. "So people can get a little uncomfortable when we go out on kids, but I'm kind of the person, that is kind of my expertise is pediatrics. I love advocating for them, bringing in training and equipment. They are my favorite population of patients."
His passion for helping kids is inspired by a 6-year-old boy VanScoy desperately tried to save in 2016. Wyatt Griffiths died in a car crash on Interstate 235 in West Des Moines.
"I still think of him every day," said VanScoy.
He says his position as Emergency Care Coordinator has helped his grieving process and is also a way to honor Wyatt's life.
The Gaudian family says they are grateful for VanScoy and his passion for helping children in their most vulnerable moments.
"That literally saved my daughter's life, and I will never forget that," said Alex Gaudian.
