This Is Iowa: Telling Iowans' stories through the game of basketball

BASKETBALL IS BIG. EVEN IN SCHOOLS THAT ARE TINY. <Yeah, there's four girls in my class and that's it.> SO WE'RE SPOTLIGHTING IOWANS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE GAME - EVEN WHILE BATTLING OFF THE COURT OPPONENTS. <PARENTS 36:59 "people you don't even know come up to you and show support"> WE'RE RUNNING LAPS WITH THE STATE'S MOST EXPERIENCED REFEREE. <CLIP 3132 TIME 16:39:42 "HE'S THE LONGEST TENURED EVERYTHING IN IOWA IT FEELS LIKE."> AND VISITING THE SMALLEST SCHOOL - WHERE THEY ONLY HAVE FIVE PLAYERS. <We never get a break. We have to play the whole game.> SO FIND A SEAT NEXT TO THE FANS WHO NEVER MISS! <2525 Formaneks Bernie 45:00-03"What else do you do in the wintertime in Garner, northern Iowa."> IT'S TIME TO BALL. THIS IS IOWA. FRIDAY NIGHT HOOPS ARE A HIGHLIGHT ON IOWA'S COLD WINTER NIGHTS. BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND ZONE DEFENSE TO IDENTIFY GREAT MOMENTS IN THE STANDS AND EVEN BETTER IOWANS ON THE COURT. WHETHER YOU'RE IN THE STATE'S LARGEST PUBLIC SCHOOL - OR THE VERY SMALLEST. <And.... I forgot to write my name.> WHEN YOU'RE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT SCISSORS-- <Oh, we're supposed to glue the words?> SPELLING CAN BE A CHALLENGE. <Why is there two H's that I have?> LANDON'S SORTING LETTERS LIKE EVERY OTHER KID IN THE STATE HIS AGE. <This is the first grade classroom.> BUT HERE IN DIAGONAL, HE AND HIS CLASSMATES ONLY REALLY HAVE TO LEARN TO COUNT TO NINE. BECAUSE EVEN WHEN NO ONE IS SICK DURING COLORING-- <Blue, yellow....> HIS ENTIRE GRADE HAS JUST NINE STUDENTS. THEY HAVE ALL OF THE SUPPLIES-- <We got pencils. Definitely.> AND THE TECHNOLOGY THE STATE'S LARGEST SCHOOLS HAVE. THEY JUST DON'T HAVE MANY STUDENTS. BUT HERE? NINE IS ACTUALLY BIG-- <Yeah, there's four girls in my class and that's it.> COMPARED TO DIAGONAL'S SOPHOMORE CLASS. <You all have to kind of get along or it just doesn't work.> ADD UP ALL OF THE KINDERGARTENE RS THROUGH SENIORS IN THIS SOUTHERN IOWA TOWN AND YOU'LL COUNT 104. <Yeah, and we've been the smallest for quite some time. Years.> 13 GRADES TAUGHT BY 12 TEACHERS. <What fraction of 8th graders did a science fair project?> WHICH MEANS MOST, LIKE SAMANTHA CRAWFORD? <You good? OK.> COVER A LOT. SHE TEACHES MATH TO SIXTH GRADERS THROUGH SENIORS. <We just do our normal top times the top.> AND COMPUTER SCIENCE TO EVERY GRADE. LIKE MATH, THAT HAS ITS POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES. <Both. Laugh. I enjoy it. Because I literally one moment I'll be with the kindergarteners and then after that I come up to Algebra II with juniors. > > ALL-- <Bell ringing.> IN A THREE- STORY BUILDING--- <Quick down stairs steps.> WHERE THE WOODEN STEPS CREAK-- <Trudging up stairs.> JUST LIKE THEY HAVE FOR 111 YEARS SINCE IT WAS BUILT. <There's always something. A window doesn't work right. Or this or that.> BUT ASK THE SUPERINTENDEN T, WHO'S ALSO THE PRINCIPAL AND ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR WHY HE LEFT A BIGGER SCHOOL TO COME BACK HOME FOR HIS THREE JOBS? <I graduated in 1991. We had nine students in my class.> AND HE'LL BRAG ABOUT HIS TOWN, WHERE THE POPULATION OF 338 IS DETERMINED. <Our community will do about anything to keep our school going.> ESPECIALLY IF SOMETHING'S GOING ON ACROSS THE STREET IN THE 'NEW' GYM-- <Basketball nat.> THAT'S NOW 50 YEARS OLD. <A high school basketball game is a community event, not just a school event here.> SUPPORTING THE ELEVEN GIRLS OUT THIS SEASON. <They're here for their community. They want to support their community. They want to make them proud.> <Basketball nat.> WIN OR LOSE, THEY DO. EVEN IF THEY AREN'T ALL SUPERSTARS. <More than half of our basketball team is really good. But like I'm not the best. But I still have the opportunity to like go out and play.> AN OPPORTUNITY AVERAGE BASKETBALL PLAYERS AT BIG SCHOOLS DON'T GET. BUT DURING GAMES, THE GIRLS CAN SUBSTITUTE. <We never get a break. We have to play the whole game.> THE BOYS CAN'T. THEIR WHOLE ROSTER IS FIVE. <There was one game where it was halftime. Me and him both had four fouls. So our coach was like, he didn't know what he was going to do.> <When you only have five, you gotta show up. You just gotta try your hardest, play your best and see how it goes.> <Like we had to finish the game with two or three players.> IT'S WHAT YOU DO IN A TINY SCHOOL WHERE THE GAME-- <Block into box.> IS JUST THE BEGINNING. <We'll have to do speech practice and then at night we'll have basketball and archery. And sometimes we have to do some robotics after that. So I might not get home until after midnight.> BECAUSE MOST KIDS ARE OUT FOR MOST ACTIVITIES. THEY HAVE TO - TO FIELD A TEAM IN THIS SCHOOL WHERE - <Zipper unzipping.> THE NINE FRIENDS YOU HAVE ON THE WAY TO A SIDEWALK CHALK RECESS ACROSS THE STREET-- <Right here, we're going to have stars.> ARE THE SAME ONES YOU'LL PROBABLY HAVE UPSTAIRS IN FRESHMAN ENGLISH. <I think I'm going to put that in my second paragraph or maybe my third one.> AND WHERE ALL-SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT S-- <Our high school girls will play here 7:30 against Moravia.> DON'T NEED A LOUD SPEAKER. BECAUSE THE ENTIRE STUDENT BODY - ALL 103 - GETS TOGETHER FOR LUNCH IN THE OLD GYM. <Hi, Jack.> EVERY ADULT HERE- <Feeling better? Good.> KNOWS EVERY KID WHO'S BATTLING THE FLU BUG. <Yeah and I feel like most of your teachers know your family too so it's kind of a whole thing.> AND ALL FOUR SOPHOMORES KNOWS EVERY FOURTH GRADER. <Aspen, why do you look sad? Jacob, what are you talking about down there?> JUST LIKE EVERYONE IN THIS GYM KNOWS WHAT YOU'RE THINKING. <One of the biggest things that I get asked is like, How are you guys still running?> <I mean we've been here for over 100 years. We just are really good at adapting.> <So like for ag class, we couldn't have an ag class here because won't have an ag teacher.> SO A BUS TAKES THEM TO MOUNT AYR - WHERE DIAGONAL'S KIDS CAN ALSO PLAY FOOTBALL. <I'm allowed to come to school here and then we share some sports over there.> DIAGONAL'S OLD BUILDING DOESN'T HAVE A CULINARY ARTS KITCHEN EITHER. SO-- <They walk up to church two blocks away and they have a full kitchen there.> AND THOSE TEACHERS WHO PULL TRIPLE DUTY UNDERSTAND THE MATH BEHIND THE BUDGET IN A TINY DISTRICT? <This will be kinda hard.> IS - KINDA - HARD. SOME, INEVITABLY, WILL LOOK DOWN ON IOWA'S SMALLEST TOWNS AS TOO QUIET. <Quiet.> JUST A PART OF THE STATE TO FLY OVER OR DRIVE THROUGH. BUT DIAGONAL'S STUDENTS WILL TELL YOU CLASSES OF FOUR OR EIGHT MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS. <Here, I get my help like automatically.> AND GIVES EVERY STUDENT THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE INVOLVED IN EVERYTHING. <Basketball nat.> <We wouldn't have the school if it wasn't for the community. And we all care and we all want to keep this place because it's such a great place to learn.> FROM IOWA'S SMALLEST CLASSES TO THE BEST IN THE BIG CLASS WHERE THE STAR'S SISTER LOST HER HAIR - <DAD 40:50 She was on her ipad pulling clumps of hair out> BUT PICKED UP FANS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BUT NEXT, WE'RE FOCUSING ON THE FANS WHO NEVER MISS - <2526 Lorrie 6:12- 14"That a way!"> EVER. <2343 Adam Urness 25:13-21"it's quite remarkable> THE HOME AND AWAY RECORD WORTH CELEBRATING. THIS IS IOWA. <NAT SEQUENCE: start with a shot of the school sign outside, with basketball nats underneath> On Tuesday and Friday nights.. <nat shoes squeaking on the floor> The high school gym in Garner.. <nat of fans cheering NOT STUDENT SECTION> is PACKED with fans! <basketball highlight> Especially during the Forest City Rivalry Game. <nat student section> The Cardinal Faithful are true and loyal... <2526 Lorrie 6:12- 14"That a way!"> But none more so than Bernie and Lorrie Formanek. <2367 Eric Formanek 23:33-35"Number one they love basketball,"> Their son, Eric, is pretty good with numbers... <2527 Bernie 9:42- 45"Eric, how many threes they got? Six"> Which is why it was easy to figure out JUST HOW MANY GAMES his father has attended. <2367 Eric Formanek 22:10-13 "2,126 straight games."> That's EVERY SINGLE home AND away game for the girls and boys teams FOR 50 YEARS. Bernie hasn't missed one-- Lorrie 6. <2367 Eric Formanek 22:18-22"The only times my mom missed is when we were sick as kids."> <2343 Adam Urness 25:13-21"When you really think about it, it's quite remarkable they've been coming to garner boys and girls basketball games before I was even alive."> Adam Urness-- head coach for the girls-- thinks it has to be some kind of record. <2521 PA Announcer 32:25-34"At this time, we'd like to welcome the GHV HS boys and girls basketball teams to center court for a special presentation."> Which is why this had to happen. <2521 34:32-43"Your devotion, positive spirit, and unwavering commitment, epitomizes everything that is special about high school basketball and the Garner Hayfield Ventura community."> Their kids haven't been out of school for years... No family members play on either team... <nat> So why keep going SOOO consistently? <2525 Formaneks Bernie 45:00-03"What else do you do in the wintertime in Garner, northern Iowa, yep."> <2345 Patience Katter 32:22-27"My parents can't even make it to all my games, but they make it to all of our games,"> It's the kind of support that's not lost on the young hoopers. <2345 Patience Katter 33:01-04"I just feel like it means a lot to have some one who cares so much about us."> <2346 boys players 44:39-47"I think it's important we definitely need it sometimes, even when we might not need it, they're still there, they could take a day off but they don't."> Anyone who has graduated in the last 50 years knows their impact. <2366 Melissa Darg 17:23-28"Everybody knows him everybody loves him, his wife, just as much as he is, they are wonderful people."> The sport looks a lot different than it did when the streak started in 1975. <Lorrie 46:02-05"Well 6 on 6 girls when we started."> But their season tickets haven't changed-- <basketball nat> They've felt basketball's highs <2527 Bernie 8:19-22 "get in there. yeah! áclapsá"> And have been crushed by the lows. <2525 Formaneks Bernie 46:42-49"The state tournament game when we lost on the last second shot to Danville. That was a hard one to take."> <basketball nat> It's an old adage: in sports there are no guarantees. <basketball shoe squeaking nat> But at a Garner Hayfield Ventura basketball game-- <2527 Bernie 8:27- 28"Play some defense!"> you can always count on Bernie and Lorrie to be there. <2525 Formaneks 48:32-37 Bernie:"As long as we can!" Lorrie: "They might be rolling us in in the wheelchairs but we're going to be here."> THAT WAS BEAU BOWMAN. RIVALRIES ARE TOUGH. BATTLING CANCER IS TOUGHER. SO IT'S AMAZING THAT EVEN OPPONENTS ARE CHEERING FOR A SISTER IN THE STANDS. <BROOKLYN 20:05 it makes me feel happy to know they're all supporting me.> THE MOTIVATION FOR THE STATE'S TOP TEAM, WHEN THIS IS IOWA CONTINUES.
