Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson were three of the biggest names in Rock and Roll when they played the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa on Feb. 2, 1959. In the early morning hours of Feb. 3, the three stars chartered a plane to their next stop on the Winter Dance Party tour.Shortly after take-off from Mason City, their plane crashed in a field north of Clear Lake, killing the three artists and pilot, Roger Peterson. It's been coined as "The Day the Music Died," which is the famous line from Don McLean's hit song "American Pie." CLEAR LAKE, Iowa — Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson were three of the biggest names in Rock and Roll when they played the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa on Feb. 2, 1959.
