Perry Middle School students recovering from a school shooting found solace in acts of kindness and community support, ultimately culminating in a project to package over 20,000 meals for people in need. Or that I should. And I know other people have struggled with feeling confident after what happened. But with people helping us, we have come a long ways," said Elyssa Hodges, a Perry eighth-grader.Help arrived in various forms. Students felt the support with banners from neighboring districts declaring "You Are Strong" and "Much Love to Perry." Second-grade students from Waukee turned their writing lessons into love letters for Perry on Valentine's Day."Their school is going through a lot of things. The instruction was to use it to spread joy. That joy took the form of a snow cone truck that pulled into Perry a few weeks later. "We know that they never want to experience what we've experienced. But we know that they're here. And they have done something for us and that's big. That's huge," said Perry fifth-grade teacher Dawn Higgins. After a semester of receiving love, the students were now the ones giving back by packaging meals for Meals from the Heartland."It's so amazing that we can do it and support others the way they have supported us," Hodges said. Despite the tragedy that struck on Jan. 4, the students of Perry Middle School learned valuable lessons about community and support. In less than two hours, the students had packaged 20,088 meals for kids around the world they'll never meet."Yeah, we've learned about how to care about our community and that we can be supported and we can support others," a student said. The resilience of the Perry community was evident. They showed that even in the face of tragedy, people show up to help one another.
