When it comes to safety, dollar-store deals might not be a bargain after all. found 81 percent contained one or more hazardous chemicals. The tests, conducted by the consumer testing group , found chemicals associated with cancer, obesity, diabetes, asthma, thyroid and kidney diseases, learning problems, lower IQ, birth defects and early puberty. Here are 10 items you're better off buying elsewhere.

Dollar General issued the following statement regarding the safety of its products:

"...The allegations in this study are in direct conflict with Dollar General’s well-established standards and practices. We strive to provide safe, quality products, as well as our own standards and customers’ expectations. To that end, we have a number of measures in place, including our product safety testing program, to provide assurance that the company’s products either meet or exceed federal and state regulatory standards.

Additionally, Dollar General suppliers, both foreign and domestic, are required to certify the products they provide to Dollar General are properly tested to ensure compliance with state and federal product regulatory standards.

Finally, a large majority of products sold in Dollar General stores are from America’s most trusted and respected brands including Clorox, Energizer, Procter & Gamble, Hanes, Coca‐Cola, Mars, Unilever, Nestle, Kimberly‐Clark, Kellogg's, General Mills, and PepsiCo."
