Rossen Reports: Tricks to get your tax refund fast
Tax season is officially open. The IRS is expecting more than 168 million people to file individual tax returns this year.
So how can you get your refund fast? Chief National Consumer Correspondent Jeff Rossen has the four simple things to do so you can beat the rush.
First, don't file your return until you have all of your W2s and 1099s. You might think you know all the information and can manually add it all up, but the forms verify what your actual earnings are. Employers have to send those forms out by Jan. 31.
Next, E-File rather than sending out a paper return and mailing it in. Electronic returns get filed faster since the IRS isn't waiting for the snail mail.
Another tip is to maximize your refund by checking for all credits and deductions available to you. Those things vary from year to year. So just because you didn't qualify for a credit last year doesn't mean you don't this year.
Finally, when you do file, double and triple-check your personal information.
Refund delays are often caused by something as simple as a typo, an incorrect tax identification number, or incomplete bank account information. You want that to be right so you don't have to contact the IRS when your money doesn't come.
This year's tax deadline is April 18.
