Cincinnati native to make history as part of Super Bowl officiating crew
RIGHT HERE ON WLWT NOW. WHEN THE SUPER BOWL IS PLAYED TWO WEEKS FROM SUNDAY, A LOCAL MAN WILL MAKE HISTORY. MIKE DARDIS HAS MORE ON THE MASON MAN WHO WILL BE ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE. MIKE ASHLEY’S NAME IS TERRY KILLENS AND HE’S ABOUT TO BECOME THE FIRST PERSON EVER TO PLAY IN A SUPER BOWL AND THEN REFEREE IN A SUPER BOWL, AND HE GOT HIS START RIGHT HERE IN THE AREA. GRADUATING FROM PURCELL MARIAN HIGH SCHOOL BACK IN THE EARLY 90S, WHERE HE WAS A STAR LINEBACKER, TERRY PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN THE GCL, MEAN BIG TEN CHAMPION, WENT OFF TO GET DRAFTED NFL SUPER BOWL PARTICIPANT IN 2000. THEN HERE WE ARE, 2024. HE’S GOING TO BE A REF IN ONE OF THE GAMES HE’S PLAYED IN. ARE YOU? SO I SPENT SOME TIME TODAY WITH PURCELL MARION CO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JAMAR MOSLEY. THAT’S TERRY’S JERSEY. WHEN HE PLAYED FOR THE TITANS SUPER BOWL 34 THEY LOST TO THE RAMS AND THE FAMOUS ENDING WHEN THEY FELL A YARD SHORT OF FORCING OVERTIME ON THE GAME’S FINAL PLAY. HE WAS IN THE NFL FOR SEVEN SEASONS, THEN YEARS LATER, HE BECAME AN NFL REFEREE. IN 2019, AND HE WILL BE THE UMPIRE FOR THE BIG GAME. FEBRUARY 11TH IN LAS VEGAS, MAKING HISTORY AND GIVING STUDENTS AT HIS ALMA MATER HERE IN CINCINNATI SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF. OUR CURRENT STUDENTS WOULD JUST SAY, HEY, HE SAT IN THOSE SAME SEATS THAT THAT I’M SITTING IN NOW. SO HE WENT OFF TO PLAY IN THE NFL. THEN AFTER THE NFL, HE JUST WENT OFF AND BECAME A REFEREE. AND THEN I LIKE I SAID, I THINK IT JUST SERVES AS A HUGE INSPIRATION THAT IF HE CAN DO WHAT I CAN DO IT. TERRY NOW WORKS FOR THE CITY OF MASON AS PART OF A CAMPUS SAFETY PROGRAM THROUGH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, WORKING IN ALL OF THE MASON SCHOOLS OUT THERE. BUT HE IS NOW THE ANSWER TO A SPORTS TRIVIA QUESTION WHO IS THE ONLY PERSON EVER TO PLAY IN A SUPER BOWL AND REFEREE ONE AS WELL? PRETTY SPECIAL STUFF. AND YOU PROBABLY WANT TO HEAR FROM TERRY KILLENS ABOUT THE MILESTONE. I DO TOO. TERRY AND I HAVE BEEN TEXTING BACK AND FORTH FOR THE LAST COUPLE DAYS. THE NFL WILL NOT LET ANY OFFICIALS SPEAK WITH THE MEDIA BEFORE THE BIG GAME, EVEN FOR A FUN FEATURE LIKE THIS ONE. SO WE’RE GOING TO CATCH UP WITH TERRY AFTER THE SUPER BOWL. I TOLD HIM, NFL, I’M NOT GOING TO ASK CONTROVERSIAL QUESTIONS. I’M NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE HOLDIN
