Students returned to Starts Right Here for the first time this week since the January shooting that killed two teenagers.
Founder Will Keeps wanted to send a message of perseverance to his students.
The nonprofit welcomed students back to class on Monday and allowed vlog into the building Tuesday morning.
"At first I didn't really want to come back because of what happened," student Trinity Tolson said, still a little on edge since the shooting. "But Will came in and he had a talk with all the students and basically just let everybody know not to give up. Like, we're going to keep going to the end."
An armed security guard now stands at the entrance and cameras roll are mounted in every room offering a sense of safety in a place many consider their home. The nonprofit has also ordered metal detectors for the main entrance.
Keeps says he doesn't want the shooting to distract the kids from reaching their goals and the fact that so many came back ready to work proves their program is working.
"Like, my saying is, it's not about what you've been through but how you get through, and these kids right now are learning how to get through. We all are," Keeps said.
