Crews from MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, captured a weather phenomenon in the sky as they evacuated ahead of Hurricane Idalia's landfall. The video shows the view from the cockpit as lightning flashes across the horizon in quick succession, an example of what's called St. Elmo's fire. According to the National Weather Service, St. Elmo's fire is "the colorful discharge of atmospheric electricity that typically occurs during a thunderstorm."The video, which was captured on Aug. 28, was posted Tuesday to the base's page on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Within hours, it had more than 345,000 views. Watch the video above to see the weather phenomenon from the sky.
