Forever 22: Photos, videos from Caitlin Clark's jersey retirement ceremony
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY TODAY HERE IN IOWA CITY. THE WOMEN KNOCK OFF THE NUMBER FOUR TEAM IN THE COUNTRY IN FRONT OF A SOLD OUT CROWD HERE AT CARVER-HAWKEYE ARENA. A FITTING SCENE FOR THE GOATS NUMBER TO RISE UP INTO THE RAFTERS. FOR TIME. FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN. THERE’S NO HIGHER HONOR IN SPORTS THAN THIS. TWO TIME WINNING TROPHY WINNER CAITLIN CLARK’S JERSEY RETIRED IN FRONT OF A SOLD OUT CARVER-HAWKEYE ARENA ON SUNDAY. I KNOW MY NUMBER IS UP THERE, BUT IT WOULDN’T BE IF IT WASN’T FOR ALL OF YOU. SO THE ONES THAT WERE MEANT TO BE. THOUSANDS OF HAWKEYE FANS PACKED THE STANDS TO GIVE A FINAL SALUTE TO THE BEST THERE’S EVER BEEN, BECAUSE SHE’S THE ALL TIME LEADING SCORER IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL. JUST BEING ABLE TO WATCH THIS IS REALLY EXCITING. IT’S CAITLIN CLARK’S DAY. IT’S MORE THAN JUST WINS AND LOSSES. CLARK CHANGED THE PROGRAM AND GREW THE GAME. THE WINNING CAME BECAUSE OF THE GREAT CULTURE THAT WE HAD. AND FOR ME, I HOPE THAT’S THE THING THAT ALWAYS STAYS INTACT. EVERY DEEP THREE IN FULL COURT ASSIST. JUST GRAVY. FOR CELEBRITIES WHO FLOCKED TO IOWA TO WITNESS THE GREATNESS. TEN YEARS AGO, THERE WERE NOT THIS MANY PEOPLE HERE. THAT’S THE FIRST THING. A COUPLE YEARS AGO, SHE GAVE HER SHOES TO ONE OF MY FRIENDS. LIKE WE CAME FOR MY BIRTHDAY. AND I FEEL LIKE IT’S JUST REALLY COOL. LIKE KNOWING THAT WE HAVE THAT MOMENT, YOU KNOW, YOU’RE A BIG DEAL WHEN FANS ARE LINING UP TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH YOUR CARDBOARD CUTOUT. WHEN SHE WAS RECRUITED, EVERYONE KNEW SOMETHING BIG WAS ON THE HORIZON, BUT NO ONE KNEW HOW HIGH CLARKE WOULD MAKE THE HAWKS FLY. HAVING YOUNG GIRLS EXCITED SHE’S PLAYING BASKETBALL, AND ALL THE GIRLS THAT ARE LIKE SHOOTING, LIKE CAITLIN CLARK. I’M A TEACHER, AND AT RECESS, BOYS ARE SHOOTING LIKE, LOOK, I’M LIKE CAITLIN. EVERYONE KNOWS THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CAITLIN. CLARK. AND NOW THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER 22. I HEARD IT FROM A LOT OF FOLKS THAT TODAY FEELS LIKE THE TURNING OF THE PAGE, OR THE END OF AN ERA. AND I THINK IF TODAY’S GAME IS ANY EVIDENCE OF WHAT’S TO COME IN THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE IOWA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM, I THINK THEY’RE IN PRETTY GOOD HANDS. IN IOWA CITY, BEA
