Hi. Yeah, you're starting off the New year with new electronics, maybe gifts for your kids, maybe for yourself. Either way, you may notice your wifi isn't running as fast as it should. Turns out, there are some serious mistakes *** lot of us are making right now. That could be slowing down your connection even if you're paying for fast wifi. So let me speed you up. It's all super easy. First tip where you put your router matters. There are *** lot of things that contribute to wifi speed. It's not just the speed of the signal you paid for from the company. It's also where you put your router. So I'm in my parents house right now. We spend *** lot of time here over the holidays and I noticed some things that can help you and them. So come on over here. This is where my parents have their router right now. They've always had it here. It's not like the prettiest thing in the world, so they keep it off to the side. But this is the worst place for it, experts say, having your router in the kitchen, bad idea because the electronic waves coming off the fridge and the microwave, whatever else you have going on, interferes with the signal. You want to put your router in the main room of the house. I'm gonna tuck through this way in the main room of the house, 5 to 7 ft up and also not inside something like this where it's gonna block the signal, right? You could look, they could put it right here, right? But higher is even better. You want to be in the main room and put it back here and then drop this through the back and go find an outlet. This would be the perfect situation. Not upstairs or downstairs. Main floor 5 to 7 ft up. No obstructions still going slow. Test out your internet speed for free. So here's what you do, right? You come here to google google dot com. Nice and easy. And you type in wifi speed test, okay? You're gonna get all this at the top and just hit that run speed test. So right now it's running my download speed. It's gonna do that first. It's gonna run my download speed. I'm gonna do this in real time. So you guys see how long it takes. Okay, done with that. Now it's doing my upload speed. So when you upload videos or whatever, how long it would normally take? It's doing that real time, people. Okay. Here we go. Your internet connection is very fast. Your internet connection should be able to handle multiple devices, streaming HD videos, video conferencing, and gaming at the same time. So that's good. Okay, great. The speed test says my internet can run multiple devices. But what exactly does that mean turns out once you get over 10 devices, your wifi signal starts to slow down. Think you don't have that many. Think again, I know what you're thinking. I'm not rich. I don't have 10 phones connected to my wifi. That's we think of it as phones. But remember it's any smart device that's hooked up to the internet, sucking power out of it and sucking speed out of it. So let me just show you in this house alone. This is my phone, right one. This is my mom's ipad that always sits right here too. Okay, this is my mom's phone. Three Amazon Alexa they have right here. four. Come over this way. My laptop five. This is *** smart T. V. Six. There's *** smart tv in that room seven, there's *** smart tv in that room eight. Um come over here here you don't think about this, your thermostat if you have like *** Honeywell or *** nest. Right? This is hooked right up to the internet, that's another one. And my son loves to play in this room. And by the way this is *** smart tv as well. My sons play station. Okay and *** Macbook Mac desktop. Okay, that's *** lot. That's *** lot of devices and all of *** sudden my wife is gonna be slower. So what you wanna do is take some of that stuff. Come this way. Come back this way with me real quick. She's not using this ipad right now. So don't just keep it on like this. Shut it off entirely when you are not using it off now. This is off the wife last hip and this one is the easiest. Shut down your router every once in *** while, just unplug it. Wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. It's just like *** computer or *** phone. It needs to be rebooted to solve any connection issues, work out bugs, etcetera. Shut it down, restart it about once *** month. None of us. We never know why, but it seems to work every time I'll put these tips in *** few more. We didn't get to on my website, Rawson Reports dot com. Back to you.

A new tablet, a new phone, even that new smartwatch... all of those devices you got for the holidays are sucking the juice out of your router, making your internet run at a snail's pace. What can you do to speed up your internet for free? Test your setupFirst things first, you need to test your internet speed, and this actually is super easy. Open your phone, your laptop, etc. Make sure you're on your home Wi-Fi, open up Google and type "run speed test." And it’s going to start testing your download speed. Download speed is important when you’re watching videos, checking emails and things like that. Then it will test the upload speed. Upload speed is important for things like video conference calls, the Zoom calls that you’re on all day. It’s going to test both of those. It will tell you whether your connection to the internet is very fast or slow. Check your router locationWhere you put the router matters. Routers have signals coming out from every way, so there are some places they shouldn’t go. Experts say, for example, to not put it in the kitchen because the appliances can actually interrupt the signal. Things like the cordless phone, the microwave, the baby monitor, etc. Routers aren’t the prettiest things in the world, and we stick them in cabinets, but that can impact strength. Place your router on the main floor of the house on a shelf, not barricaded by anything, up about 5 to 7 feet high. Count your devicesI bet you have no idea how many devices you have hooked up to your Wi-Fi all at once. From your Airpods, to your iPads, to the Alexa to the gaming consoles. After about 10 devices, your internet will really start to slow. So take a count of all the devices in the rooms of your house. Remember, even if they're not being used, they're still using the WiFi because they're constantly updating. So make sure to turn those all the way off when they're not in use. Turn it offSometimes the best way to speed up your router is to shut it down for a few seconds. It's just like any device – it needs some time to reboot. Secure your internetMake sure your internet is locked up and set to private. It may sound simple, but if you don’t, you could have neighbors and unwanted guests using your network without your permission.
