People who were spanked as children are more likely to become violent in future relationships, according to a study from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.Researchers asked 750 19- and 20-year-olds if they’d been spanked when they were children. The participants were also asked if they had ever become violent toward romantic partners.Sixty-eight percent of subjects said they'd been physically punished as children, and 19 percent had become violent toward partners.Nearly 42 percent of Americans spanked or "smacked" their children during the past year.A similar study from the University of Michigan found that kids who are physically punished experience higher rates of mental health issues - like anti-social behavior and depression - as adults.
