Social Security Administration nominee faces tough confirmation hearing Tuesday
Frank Bisignano, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Social Security Administration, will sit for a Tuesday, facing tough questions over the White House's efforts to scale down the agency.
Social Security has been one of several targets by the Department of Government Efficiency. The agency's lead, Elon Musk, has previously called it "the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time," adding that entitlements like it are "the big one to eliminate."
The SSA recently announced , affecting customer service for the more than 70 million Americans it serves. Dozens of office closures across the country are also planned.
The cuts add to an announcement taking effect beginning March 31, where new and existing Social Security applicants will no longer be able to identify themselves over the phone and instead.
"They are probably taking 90% of the actions necessary to crater this agency into a total system collapse," Martin O'Malley, former Social Security Administration commissioner, said about the Department of Government Efficiency's effort during a press call with the Democratic National Committee. "They have to do that, by their index, because in order to rob it, they first have to wreck it."
