Scammers impersonating JetBlue offer fake $500 gift cards

The company warned customers not to fall for the gift card scam.

JetBlue Airways on Friday warned customers of a scam that offers $500 gift cards to celebrate its 17th anniversary. The Long Island City-based company took to Twitter to remind its 109,000 followers that legitimate offers would only be found on its website or verified social media accounts. "Consumers should beware of social media postings that appear to offer vouchers or gift cards, such as a free $500 gift card," the FBI warns on its site. "Some fraudulent offers may pose as promotions or contests. The fraudulent postings often look as if a friend shared the link. Oftentimes, these scams lead to online surveys designed to steal personal information. Never provide your personal information to an unknown party or untrustworthy website." This isn't the first time fraudsters have impersonated the budget-friendly airline. JetBlue warned passengers of a similar scam in 2012 and a similar hoax in 2016. JetBlue is the sixth-largest airline in the nation, its main base located at John F. Kennedy Airport. It serves 97 destinations in the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
