Rossen Reports: Touring new classrooms as teachers threaten 'safety strikes'
Hi, boy, this is the hot topic right now, right? Schools in a mad scramble to get everything ready in time for the fall. Many schools opening in just a couple of weeks. How do they keep kids safe? What about the teachers? Just this week, teachers across the country threatening to go on safety strikes. So schools are trying to transform classrooms with everything from flexi glass top piping to keep kids apart. But is it safe enough? What does it look like? Let's go inside for a look from the hallways to the classrooms to the cafeteria. Soon students will be pouring in. Question is, will it be safe? I want to show you around this elementary school because they're doing some really fascinating stuff here. And this school is set to open like so many others in the next few weeks, and they're still trying to figure out how to execute the plan safely. For example, they've started putting down the stickers on the floor to stay six feet apart. But how do you really control that in the hallway with kids? Something that's fascinating they're doing inside the classroom. Come on in here. This really helped me as a parent, so I'm hoping it helps you to. I'm really bad spatially so. I didn't know. Okay. When you space out the desks, how many can you actually fit in the classroom? This is I've been in my kids classroom, of course, A 1,000,000 times. This is actually even a little bigger than an average size classroom. There are 19 desks they've been able to fit in here, and they're all six feet apart. So think about your kid's classroom. How many kids air in your kids class, How many of them could come? But this is 19 desks, and you can also see they're all facing the same way. So when this student coughs into the back of this student, it's into the back of their head, not the front. Now I want to take you downstairs real quick because you got to see what they're doing in the kindergarten classroom. Come on. So this school has actually gotten pretty creative. They have this piping in this kindergarten class, and what they're gonna do is it's not installed yet. They're gonna put plexi glass here. So the child sitting here has plexiglass on both sides and can see the other kids but can't cough on them. Can't come in contact with them, and you can see they painted it all the different color. So this is actually one of the more creative things I've seen to get kids back into school. Cincinnati schools Air giving kids shields as well, but for all grades, not just kindergarten. Plus these shields air portable. The students keep their own and take it with them wherever they go. This school in Florida taking the learning outside building picnic table six feet apart and boom, you have outdoor classrooms. And what about how kids get to and from school? Some districts will limit the amount of kids on the bus at once. In Austin, Texas, Onley 12 kids can ride together in Atlanta administrator saying their buses will be at 60% capacity. But this may be the biggest challenge of all the cafeteria. How do you get all those kids together to eat? Principal showing me. So if you look down here, Come on over here, guys, you can see 15 14 13. So if 13 were my assigned number, that's where your city. This is where I'm sitting every single day and I'm facing. We're all facing the same way, yes, and so, for safer this classroom, their class actually will be green in the classroom as well, so that we can denote who is always 13 at this spot within the classroom. And it helps us a little bit with contact tracing if we need it. When I was speaking with the principal, he actually gave me a great tip. If you're curious what your school is doing, call the main office and set up a quick tour just like we did, he said. And he said, I apologize to all my fellow principles for getting inundated with calls. But he said, Most schools, they're gonna let you come on in so you feel safe, hope it helps back to you.
