Rossen Reports: Save 40 cents per gallon with this free gas app
With gas prices being this high, how can you fight back? No matter where you live or what station you pump gas at, here are some ways you can save money and get cash back every time you fill up.
Upside
This app partners with gas stations across the country to offer you cash back every time you fill up.
You can get up to 25 cents per gallon but when you first download the app, the offers are much higher. Plus, the app often offers promotions and codes that can also amp up the savings as well.
Once you download the app, it will show you the gas stations offering cash back as a list or on a map. We saw options to get 30 to 49 cents off per gallon at surrounding stations.
When you see an offer you like, hit the "claim" button. You then have four hours to cash in on the offer. When you get to the gas station, you can either "check in" with a button on the app or upload a receipt. Receipts are checked against a station's transaction data to confirm purchases. Then you’ll get cash back within a few days. You can get it as a gift card, through PayPal, or straight to your bank account.
GasBuddy
Sign up online to get a free GasBuddy card. It links right up to your bank account. You can save up to 25 cents a gallon just by using the GasBuddy card, rather than a credit or debit card.
All you have to do is check out what deals are available in your area and activate them. GasBuddy also has an app that will let you know what the prices are at the gas stations around you so you know you’re getting the lowest price in the area.
Rewards/Loyalty Programs
Slash prices by joining free gas station rewards programs. Sunoco Go Rewards offers 3 cents off per gallon. For BP, you can save 5 cents on every gallon. If you have a favorite gas station, just search for it and find out what kind of loyalty program it offers.
Google Maps
This app just added an option that will show you which route is the most fuel-efficient choice for wherever you’re going. Just look for a tiny green icon on a route. The app says fuel-efficient routes usually have fewer hills, less traffic and constant speeds.
Save Fuel
AAA has come out with ways to be a more fuel-efficient driver too.
- Keep your tires properly inflated. Underinflation reduces fuel economy.
- Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard acceleration. These greatly increase fuel consumption.
- Minimize the use of your air conditioning. Even at highway speeds, open windows have less effect on fuel economy than the engine power required to operate the air conditioning.
