Rossen Reports: Most annoying airplane behavior revealed (and it’s gross)
Flying is already a challenging experience, but there could be things that we’re doing that are annoying to others. The travel company, Skyscanner, did a survey asking people what airplane etiquette rules are the most offensive if broken. Here are some of the top answers:Asking someone to switch seats: About 31% of the people surveyed say this is an annoying behavior.Using both armrests: About 31% say this is a big no-no. Some travel insiders disagree, saying the person in the middle seat gets both armrests (considering they don’t have easy access to the aisle, leaning that way or the ability to rest on the wall of the window seat). Others say the middle armrests are to be shared between all three people. Where do you stand on this issue?Reclining your seat: Nearly 31% of the people surveyed said this is the most annoying behavior on an airplane. While some believe it’s okay to do it in First Class or a section with extra room, travel experts say the best way to approach it is to ask the person behind you if it’s okay to recline (or at least warn them).Taking off your shoes or socks: About 35% say this is the most offensive behavior. Are you okay with someone taking off their shoes, socks or both?Being chatty: Yeah, this one ranks pretty high. About 39% say they don’t want to strike up a conversation with their seatmates. Travel experts say there are subtle ways to show someone you’re not willing to chat with strangers. Like putting in your headphones, wearing sunglasses or a sleep mask, or just putting up the hood on your jacket or sweatshirt.Using speakerphone: You’re really not supposed to be on the phone once the boarding door has closed. But this is referring to before that or right after you land. About 40% of people agree that using speakerphone so the rest of the airplane can hear is the most offensive. The best advice is to use your headphones or just not take the call at all.Personal grooming: This is the big no-no, with 42% saying personal grooming on an airplane is the worst thing you can do. From painting, clipping and filing your nails to trimming your beard, people find it annoying! Since personal grooming isn’t an emergency, just don’t do it.
