Robert Allen Davis is charged with first-degree murder in the 1989 disappearance of Barbara Lenz.His arrest comes nearly 36 years after Lenz went missing in the western Iowa town of Woodbine. The Iowa Attorney General's Cold Case Unit announced Davis' arrest Tuesday after months of investigation. A criminal complaint says Davis and Lenz were in a relationship at the time, and Davis was the last person to see Lenz before she disappeared. The complaint details several incidents of violence, including times when Davis strangled Lenz to the point of unconsciousness. Lenz sought medical treatment for her injuries on multiple occasions. Davis, 61, was living in Council Bluffs at the time of his arrest. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop. Davis is currently in the Harrison County jail on a $3 million bond. Court documents say Davis used his fist to strike a woman in the face and then forced her to have sexual intercourse twice. Court records say the woman told Davis: "This is rape."She waited until Davis fell asleep and then ran from the residence and climbed a fence to escape. Court records detail another incident that happened three days later with the same woman in 1996. A criminal complaint says Davis was hiding in the woman's vehicle. When she discovered him and tried to run away, Davis chased her and grabbed her by the throat from behind. The complaint says Davis dragged her away from the house and into the vehicle. The woman escaped by jumping from the moving vehicle. She sustained injuries to her neck and throat that include significant bruising. For these crimes, Davis ended up pleading guilty to third-degree burglary and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse causing no injury. A sentencing order shows Davis was sentenced to a five-year suspended sentence. Davis was placed on probation for three years.
