A heartbroken family in Texas is hoping to warn other parents about the medical issue that took their son's life.
reported Frankie Delgado III, 4, died from something known as "dry drowning" a week after swimming with family in the Texas City Dike.
Francisco Delgado Jr. said he immediately called 911 when his son stopped breathing after several days of an illness that resembled a stomach bug, including vomiting and diarrhea.
Doctors found fluid in the boy's lungs and around his heart and told family that he had died from "dry drowning."
Dry drowning can occur hours or days after a person inhales water and mostly affects young children.
Medical experts said symptoms of dry drowning include trouble breathing, persistent coughing, sleepiness and fatigue, and vomiting.
