White House: Cancerous lesion removed from Biden's chest last month, no treatment needed
GET SNOWED LATE TONIGHT TOMORROW MORNING. SHAYNA: THANK YOU SO MUCH. AS WE REPORT OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT PRESIDENT BIDEN HAD A SKIN LESION REMOVED AND IT WAS CANCEROUS. HERE TO EXPLAIN AND TALK ABOUT THIS IS A DOCTOR. SHE IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE DIVISION OF DERMATOLOGY AND COMMUNITY HEALTH. PLEASE TELL ME I GOT YOUR NAME RIGHT. >> YOU DID. THANK YOU. >> WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOU TO JOIN US. LET’S START WITH THE DIAGNOSIS THE DOCTOR SAID IT WAS A BASAL CELL CARCINOMA. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE TREATMENT? >> THEY ARE EXCEEDINGLY COMMON. IT IS ESTIMATED OVER 3.6 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES ARE DIAGNOSED ANNUALLY WITH THAT TYPE OF SKIN CANCER. IT IS THE MOST COMMON IN THE UNITED STATES AND WORLDWIDE. IT IS VERY TREATABLE. HE ALWAYS SAY WE DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO DIE FROM SKIN CANCER AND DEATH AND BAD OUTCOMES FOR SKIN CANCER ARE LARGELY PREVENTABLE BECAUSE SKIN CANCER IS LARGELY TREATABLE. SO WE ARE THANKFUL TO HEAR THAT THE PRESIDENT WAS DIAGNOSED AND TREATED IN A TIMELY FASHION. ALL THE DOCTORS THAT WORK FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND SKIN CANCER EDUCATION WE THANK HIM FOR SHARING HIS PERSONAL STORY IN ORDER TO FORWARD PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION. WE ARE THRILLED THROUGH HIS SPREADING AWARENESS ABOUT THIS THAT MORE PEOPLE WILL GET TIMELY CHECKS. >> WE NEED ANYBODY SPREADING AWARENESS FOR SURE. >> EVEN EXAMINED THOUSANDS OF MOLES AND MARKS ON HUMAN SKIN IS IT EASY TO SPOT THIS TYPE OF CANCER? >> DERMATOLOGISTS ARE HIGHLY TRAINED TO SPOT THIS SIGN OF SKIN CANCER. THERE ARE BASIC GUIDELINES WE LOOK FOR FOR EXAMPLE HAZEL SARTRE SONOMA’S -- BASAL CARCINOMAS HAVE A SMOOTH FIRM ON -- SMOOTH FIRM BUMP ON THE SKIN THAT SOMETIMES BLEED BUT SOMETIMES THE SIGNS CAN BE SUBTLE. AND WE HAVE PATIENTS COME IN THAT ARE CHECKED FOR SOMETHING OUT -- SOMETHING ELSE AND THE DOCTOR FINDS THIS ON THEIR SKIN. IT IS A TESTAMENT TO THE FACT THAT PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE AN ANNUAL KIN CANCER CHANCE -- CHECK BY A DERMATOLOGIST. WE CAN PICK UP ON THE THINGS BEFORE THEY BECOME OBVIOUS. >> IT MAKES SUCH A DIFFERENCE. I DO NOT HAVE TO TELL YOU MELANOMA IS THE DEADLIEST TYPE OF SKIN CANCER. CAN YOU COMPARE THESE TWO? >> SURE. THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES OF SKIN CANCERS. THE FIRST TWO BASAL CELL CARCINOMA AND ANOTHER TYPE DISCLAIM A CELL CARCINOMA ARE WHAT WE CHARACTERIZE AS NONMELANOMA SKIN CANCERS BECAUSE THEY ARISE FROM REGULAR SKIN CELLS. THE THIRD TYPE L AND O MODE COMES FROM THE TYPE OF SKIN CELLS THAT PRODUCE MOLES. IT IS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF SKIN CANCER ENTIRELY IT IS MORE AGGRESSIVE AND CAN BE DEADLY. FORTUNATELY, FAR LESS COMMON THAN THE OTHER TWO. >> THANK YOU FOR THAT AND PRESIDENT BIDEN’S DR. SAYS THAT ALL THE CANCER TISSUES WERE SUCCESSFULLY REMOVED. I KNOW HE IS NOT YOUR PATIENT THAT BASED ON THE INFORMATION WE HAVE FROM HIS DOCTOR WHAT IS THE PROGNOSIS FOR THE PRESIDENT? >> THE PROGNOSIS FOR THIS IF IT IS TREATED IS VERY GOOD. THIS IS WHY, AGAIN, IT IS GREAT THAT PRESIDENT BIDEN SHARED HIS STORY AND ON BEHALF OF ALL OF OUR DOCTORS THAT TREAT CAN CANCER WE ARE GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR SHOWING OTHER PEOPLE THAT MAY BE DIAGNOSED WITH THIS THAT THEY CAN BE CHECKED AND THEY CAN BE DIAGNOSED AND TREATED QUICKLY. THEY CAN DO VERY WELL. >> WE ARE GRATEFUL TO YOU, DOCTOR, FOR SPENDING YOUR FRID

White House: Cancerous lesion removed from Biden's chest last month, no treatment needed
A skin lesion removed from President Joe Biden's chest last month was a basal cell carcinoma — a common form of skin cancer — his doctor said Friday, adding that no further treatment was required.Dr. Kevin O'Connor, the White House doctor who has served as Biden's longtime physician, said “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed” during the president's routine physical on Feb. 16. Biden, 80, was deemed by O'Connor to be “ healthy, vigorous” and “fit ” to handle his White House responsibilities during that physical exam, which comes as he is weeks away from launching an expected bid for reelection in 2024.O'Connor said the site of the removal on Biden's chest has “healed nicely” and the president will continue regular skin screenings as part of his routine health plan.Basal cells are among the most common and easily treated forms of cancer — especially when caught early. O'Connor said they don't tend to spread like other cancers, but could grow in size, which is why they are removed.Biden had “several localized non-melanoma skin cancers" removed from his body before he started his presidency, O'Connor said in his Feb. 16 summary of the president's health, noting it was well established that Biden spent a lot of time in the sun during his youth.First lady Jill Biden in January had two basal cell lesions removed from her right eye and chest. She said in an Associated Press interview last week that she's now “extra careful” about sunscreen, especially when she’s at the beach.Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growing cancer that usually is confined to the surface of skin — doctors almost always can remove it all with a shallow incision — and seldom causes serious complications or becomes life-threatening.The Bidens have long been advocates for fighting cancer.
