[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] REPORTER: AFTER SPENDING 105 DAYS IN TWO DIFFENTER HOSPITALS, LYNLEE NICHOLS IS FINALLY GOING HOME. >> TO GET HOME, GET IN MY OWN HOUSE, MY OWN BED, I AM OVERWHELMED. REPORTER: WHILE EIGHT MONTHS PREGNANT, NICHOLS CONTRACTED COVID. >> I WAS COMPLETELY HEALTHY. REPORTER: HER CONDITION WORSENED AND SHE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL IN MONTGOMERY FOR AN EMERGENCY C-SECTION. >> I WAS WORRIED I WAS GOING TO HAVE A BOND. I GAVE BIRTH TO A CHILD I HAD NEVER SEEN, NEVERELD, H NEVER HEARD CRY. REPORTER: ON TOP OF NEVER SEEGIN HER NEWBORN NICHOLS WAS PLACED , INTO A COMA FOR 9 WEEKS. >>. ON AUGUST 13, THEY PUT HER ON A VENTILATOR. SHE CONTINUED TO GET WORSE OVER TIME SEDATION AND THINGS LIKE , THAT WEREN’T WORKING FOR HER. REPORTER: RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS IN TIME NICHOLS WAS TRANSFERRED , TO BOKROWOOD HOSPITAL WHERE SHE STAYED FOR 45 DAYS. >> HER DISEASE WAS EENXTSIVE AND MOST LIKELY TERMINAL. >> WE DID NOT EXPECT HER TO RECOVER. REPORTER: DOCTORS HAD TO PUT NICHOLS ON AN ECMO MACHINE, OR EXTRACORPOREAL MEMBRANE OXYGENATION. >> IT IS USUALLY ONLY DONE IN TRANSPLANT CENTERS. >> MOST OF THE TIME WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEONE WHO PROGRESSES TO THIS POINT, THE END RESULT IS THEY ULTATIMELY PASSED. REPORTER:REPORTER: THE MACHINE ACTED AS HER HEART AND LUNGS TO HELP HER GAIN STRENGTH AND BREATHE ON HER OWN. >> IN WEEKLY AND SOMETIMES MORE THAN WEEKLY CONVERSATIONS WITH VANDERBILT AND EMORY, THEY WERE ENCOURAGING, SHE’S DOING WELL SHE MAY GET OFF ECMO AND , CONTINUE TO RECOVER. WE WEREE, LIK WE DON’T KNOW. WE WILL SEE. REPORTER: BUT TO THE DOCTORS’ SURPRISE NICHOLS CAME OUT OF HER , COMA AND WAS TAKEN OFF THE VENTILATOR. >> PLEASE TAKE MY STORY SERIOUSLY. I SHOULD NOT BE ALIVE TOD.AY THERE IS NO REASON ON EARTH OTHER TNHA GOD AND PRAYERS AND AN AMAZING MEDICAL TEAM. REPORT:ER NICHOLS’ RECOVERY IS FAR FROM OVER. Lynlee Nichols was previously diagnosed and hospitalized with COVID-19.During her admission in a Montgomery, Alabama, hospital, she also delivered her second baby.Nichols spent 45 days in critical care in Montgomery and was then transferred to Brookwood Medical Center to be placed on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine.Nichols subsequently spent an additional 45 days in the ICU prior to admitting to the rehab unit.Doctors thought she would need a lung transplant, but she recovered and no longer needs one.Learn more in the video above.
BROOKWOOD, Ala. — Lynlee Nichols was previously diagnosed and hospitalized with COVID-19.
