Perry welcomes new Italian manufacturer to boost local economy
Leaders in Perry hope a new Italian manufacturing company will boost their economy by $14 million.
Perry is trying to replace the 1,200 jobs lost last year when Tyson Foods closed.
"It's nice to have something to celebrate," said Sven Peterson, Perry city administrator.
The city of Perry is celebrating a unanimous city council vote Monday night and the future. It's the first step to invite an Italian manufacturer to open its new U.S. headquarters in Perry. ADR Axle is based in Milan and makes agricultural parts like axles, braking systems, and suspensions. It will build a new 54,000-square-foot building in Perry's industrial park south of town. That means 35 jobs with more to come.
"They value their worker, and they want to have a quality work environment for the worker and pay really good wages for these workers," said Jon Callen, ADR's Iowa representative.
Sid Juwarker with the Greater Des Moines Partnership helped make the deal.
"How can we help the typical Iowa way of going about things. And that's, I think, was the selling point for them," Juwarker said.
Perry is a good fit because they already have several agricultural manufacturers and are close to potential customers like John Deere.
"It's pretty difficult. You get quite the unicorn to come in and fill 1,200 jobs that we lost with Tyson closing last year. But really being able to just kind of chip away at that one piece at a time and, you know, with other projects to come in the future, hopefully we continue to chip away at that," Peterson said.
ADR is also taking advantage of Iowa economic incentives. If all goes as planned, they will open their new U.S. headquarters and manufacturing plant by the end of 2026.
