This pasta-making hack shows we've been straining it wrong all along

We've been draining our beloved spaghetti wrong this whole time

There's a reason the first thing most people learn how to cook is pasta: It's impossible to mess up 鈥 or so we thought. But then we saw this photo of how we've been draining our beloved spaghetti wrong all along. Twitter user @Daibellaaa was one of many people to share the photos when the image went viral in 2017. The images show an easier way to drain pasta, which involves putting the strainer in the pot, then tipping it over to let the water spill out. This way, the pasta stays in the same container the whole time 鈥 and your spaghetti stays far away from your potentially dirty sink basin.Genius, no? Well, not so fast. Betty Gold, senior product analyst in the Kitchen Appliances & Technology Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, isn't impressed. "I would make the argument that this isn't that innovative of an idea, considering how many saucepans come with lids that do that straining for you, so you don't need a colander at all 鈥 isn't that smarter?" She also points out that the chances of having a colander that nests perfectly inside your saucepan are fairly low. "If it's the tiniest bit too small, you risk pouring your pasta down the drain or into the basin of your sink," she said. Plus, if you like to rinse your noodles before eating them, this trick will actually complicate matters even more.So while this trick isn't going to hurt your pasta per se, it's not for everyone 鈥 or every dish.
