Oklahoma foster family picking up the pieces after wildfire destroys home
ON THE GROUND? NOT ONLY WAS THIS HOME DAMAGED, CHANTAL, BUT IT WAS THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR TOO. I SPOKE WITH HOMEOWNERS TODAY WHO SAY THERE ARE OVER 3000 SQUARE FOOT. HOME IS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. EVERYTHING IS A LOSS. THEY SAID THIS MORNING THERE WAS ACTUALLY STILL SOME SMOLDERING. A FIRE CREWS HAD TO COME AND PUT SOME WATER OVER THE HOUSE, OVER THE PROPERTY AGAIN, BUT THEY EMPHASIZE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO LET THIS TRAGEDY STOP THEM FROM WHAT THEY SAY THEIR CALLING IS FOSTERING CHILDREN IN THE AREA. FIRES ACROSS OKLAHOMA HAVE DESTROYED COUNTLESS BUILDINGS AND HOMES, INCLUDING MORGAN AND DEMETRIUS MAYHEWS. I WAS ACTUALLY AT A FUNERAL FOR A STUDENT WHEN I GOT THE CALL THAT OUR HOME WAS ON FIRE. ALL THAT WE KNOW RIGHT NOW IS IT SEEMS LIKE IT STARTED WITH A POWER LINE. CAUGHT THE FENCE ON FIRE, WHICH THEN CAUGHT MY NEIGHBOR’S HOME ON FIRE, WHICH SET A FIRE TO OUR HOME. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS HOME AT THE TIME OF THE BLAZE. THEY SAY EVERYTHING IS A TOTAL LOSS. WHEN WE STOP BY THEIR HOME SATURDAY, THEY GAVE US A CLOSER LOOK AT THE DAMAGE, INCLUDING A MELTED TRAMPOLINE AND OTHER TOYS THAT ONCE FILLED THE BACKYARD. OUR FOSTER BABY BOY. HE TURNED ONE YESTERDAY AND HIS PARTY WAS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AT 1:00 AT THE HOME. THEY ARE DERAILED AS THEY WORK TO PUT THE PIECES BACK TOGETHER. THEY ARE COUNTING ON FAMILY AND COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT. THEIR TWO KIDS AND FOUR FOSTER KIDS ARE STAYING WITH FAMILY. MORGAN SAYS NO MATTER WHAT HOME LOOKS LIKE IN THE FUTURE, THEY WON’T LET THIS BARRIER KEEP THEM FROM FOSTERING. WE’VE RAISED 25 CHILDREN AND WE DON’T PLAN ON STOPPING. WE TRUST GOD. IT IS A DEVASTATING INCIDENT, BUT WE TRUST GOD AND WE BELIEVE THAT, YOU KNOW, WE WILL REBUILD AND HE WILL RESTORE FOR US. NOW, YOU MAY NOTICE BEHIND ME THERE IS SOME YELLOW CAUTION TAPE THAT WAS PUT UP SHORTLY AFTER WE SPOKE WITH THE FAMILY. THEY TOLD ME THEY CHOSE TO TAPE OFF THEIR PROPERTY AS A PRECAUTION TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND TO AVOID TRESPASSERS AND THE MESSAGE THEY WANT TO GET TO OUT TO FOLKS TODAY IS FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING DRIVING OUT TO ASSESS ANY DAMAGE IN THEIR AREA. THEY’RE THEY’RE ASKING PEOPLE TO BE CONSIDERATE OF PEOPLE LIVING IN THESE NEIGHBORHOODS THAT HAVE BEEN IMPACTED, AND THE FIRST RESPONDERS THAT MAY NEED TO GO OUT TO OTHER EMERGENCIES.
