An attorney for two women cooperating with a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against former Rep. Matt Gaetz is speaking out.
On Monday, attorney Joel Leppard told several news outlets his clients were paid for sexual favors. One, according to Leppard, claims she witnessed Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old in July 2017.
"As she was walking out to the pool area, she turned to her right and witnessed her friend having sex with Rep. Gaetz. Her friend at that time was 17," Leppard alleged. "When he found out about her age, Rep. Gaetz stopped having sexual intercourse with her. And he only started the sexual intercourse interactions later on when she turned 18."
Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing in the matter and has pointed to a separate Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking allegations involving young girls that ultimately did not charge him.
A separate House Ethics Committee probe effectively ended when Gaetz resigned from Congress last week shortly after Trump's nomination. The committee plans to meet again Wednesday for a possible vote on whether to release findings from its investigation.
House Speaker Mike Johnson says the House Committee should not release its report since Gaetz is no longer a member of Congress.
