New Iowa Poll shows rising support for former president Donald Trump ahead of caucuses
A new poll is offering more insight into how Republican candidates are faring in Iowa with just five weeks left until the Iowa caucuses.
For the first time during this campaign, support for Donald Trump jumped above 50%.
The poll , NBC News and Mediacom shows 51% of likely caucusgoers have Trump as their first choice for president.
Ron DeSantis pulled out ahead of Nikki Haley with 19% support. Haley has 16%.
Coming in fourth in the poll with 5% is Vivek Ramaswamy.
Chris Christie is the only other candidate who polled more than 1%.
vlog political analyst Dennis Goldford said Trump is maintaining a pretty constant and significant lead.
"The numbers really didn't change very much," Goldford said. "The polling data for Trump went up a little bit, more or less the same for Haley and DeSantis down in the high teens."
He said DeSantis and Haley both need to exceed expectations on caucus night.
"If they were to pull the former president down below the 50% mark in a significant way, that would be a very big surprise and would be unexpected and would be the news," Goldford said. "If they all of a sudden were to double their numbers in the current poll, whatever happened to the Trump numbers, that would be unexpected."
