Family loses everything in apartment fire, including son's unique prosthetic arm

Family loses everything in apartment fire, including son's unique prosthetic arm
AND OMAHA FAMILY LOSES EVERYTHING IN AN APARTMENT FIRE, INCLUDING A UNIQUE PROSTHETIC HELPING THEIR SON. THANKS FOR JOINING US ON BILL SCHAMMERT. AND I’M QUANECIA FRASER THE FIRE AT THE HIGH POINT APARTMENTS STARTED IN THE AFTERNOON ON FEBRUARY 3RD. THE FLAMES IN THE ATTIC SPACE WERE FUELED BY STRONG WINDS. SEVERAL WERE LEFT WITHOUT A HOME. MANY OF THEIR THINGS BURNED. NOW THE FAMILY IS TRYING TO GET A NEW PROSTHETIC FOR THEIR CHILD, WHICH TOOK THEM ALMOST FIVE YEARS THE FIRST TIME AROUND. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S PETE CUDAHY SPOKE TO THE FAMILY AND THE COMPANY WHO MAKES HERO ARMS IN THIS STORY YOU’RE ONLY SEEING ON SEVEN, PETE. BILL QUANECIA HIS PROSTHETIC ARM DIDN’T JUST ALLOW JOSEPH HECKEL TO HAVE MOBILITY IN HIS RIGHT ARM. IT ALSO MADE HIM FEEL LIKE HIS FAVORITE SUPERHERO, MILES MORALES. WHILE THE FAMILY SAYS THEY ARE MORE THAN THE MATERIAL THINGS THEY’VE LOST. LOSING THE HERO ARM IS HITTING THEM HARD. JOHN HECKEL AND HIS TWO KIDS LOST EVERYTHING IN THE HIGH POINT APARTMENTS FIRE. IT’S THE SECOND TIME THEY’VE HAD TO START OVER IN SIX MONTHS. WE JUST HAD A DRUNK DRIVER COME THROUGH OUR WALL BACK IN SEPTEMBER AT ANOTHER APARTMENT THAT WE WERE IN. THIS TIME, THOUGH, THEIR LOSS INCLUDED HECKEL’S SON’S PROSTHETIC ARM. JOSEPH WAS BORN WITH AMNIOTIC BAND SYNDROME, OR ABS, A RARE CONDITION WHICH RESTRICTS BLOOD FLOW CAUSING BIRTH DEFORMITIES. MY SON HAS. HE’S MISSING MOST OF HIS LEFT HAND. AND SO THE NICE THING ABOUT OPEN BIONICS IS WE WERE ABLE TO GET THAT BIONIC ARM WITHOUT IT, WITHOUT HAVING TO DO ANY INVASIVE SURGERIES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. OPEN BIONICS CREATED THE HERO ARM. IT’S A PROSTHETIC WHICH IS SUPERHERO THEMED FOR CHILDREN. MISSING LIMBS. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY SEE THAT, YOU KNOW, THEIR LIMB DIFFERENCE IS ACTUALLY WHAT CAN MAKE THEM REALLY COOL AND FEEL REALLY EMPOWERED. ELISE GRISET IS THE CLINICAL DIRECTOR OF OPEN BIONICS IN THE U.S. SHE WORKED DIRECTLY WITH JOSEPH TO HELP HIM GET THE ARM. I THINK HE WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST HERO ARMY USER IN THE UNITED STATES THAT GOT OUR MILES MORALES SPIDER-MAN ARM. HECKEL SAYS IT ALLOWED HIS 11 YEAR OLD TO FEEL LIKE HIS FAVORITE SUPERHERO. HE WAS SO EXCITED. THE FAMILY WAS SO EXCITED. IT WAS. YEAH, I THINK IT WAS JUST A REALLY INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE AND LET HIM USE BOTH HANDS. HIM BEING ABLE TO PICK UP THINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH NOT JUST HIS RIGHT HAND, YOU KNOW, BEING ABLE TO GO AHEAD AND HOLD THINGS IN ONE HAND WHILE HE CAN STILL OPERATE, YOU KNOW, WITH THE OTHER. IT DEFINITELY. YEAH, IT’S IT’S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT DOES MAKE THIS A LOT HARDER. DESPITE EVERYTHING, THE HECKEL’S LOST, JOHN SAYS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT HIS FAMILY IS SAFE. WE DON’T. WE KNOW THAT THE MATERIAL THINGS AREN’T WHAT DEFINES US. WE ARE NOT THE SUM OF OUR STUFF, YOU KNOW. AND HE KNOWS THAT AS WELL TOO. EVEN WITH HIM HAVING HIS ARM, YOU KNOW, THAT WASN’T SOMETHING THAT HE WOULD TRY TO DEPEND ON EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR EVERY SINGLE THING. UNFORTUNATELY, JOSEPH WAS ONLY ABLE TO HAVE HIS HERO ARM FOR A SINGLE YEAR. OPEN BIONICS IS ACTIVELY TRYING TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP THE FAMILY REPLACE THE ARM. FOR NOW, YOU CAN HELP THE HECKLES BY VISITING THEIR GOFUNDME. I HAVE A LINK TO IT IN THIS STOR
