NCAA upholds yearlong suspension of Iowa's Noah Shannon
GOT OUT SAFELY. WELL, HAWKEYE FOOTBALL PLAYER WHO ADMITS TO BREAKING NCAA RULES HAS BEEN DENIED HIS SUSPENSION. AN APPEAL THIS EFFECTIVELY ENDS THE COLLEGE CAREER FOR DEFENSIVE TACKLE NOAH SHANNON. vlog SPORTS DIRECTOR SCOTT REISNER JOINS US NOW. AND SCOTT, THIS IS A BIG BLOW TO THE HAWKEYES. YEAH, WELL, SHANNON, SUSPENSION IS FOR A YEAR. AND SINCE HE’S A SIXTH YEAR SENIOR, THIS IS IT FOR A GUY WHO WAS ONE OF THE TOP LEADERS ON THE TEAM. HEAD COACH KIRK FERENTZ SAYS SHANNON ADMITTED TO MAKING AT LEAST ONE WAGER ON AN EVENT INVOLVING THE HAWKEYES IN ANOTHER SPORT. HE WAS OVER 21 AT THE TIME, BUT THIS GOES AGAINST NCAA RULES. HE GOT THAT YEARLONG SUSPENSION AND THEN THE IOWA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HELPED HIM APPEAL THAT RULING, HOPING THE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN WOULD GET A CHANCE TO PLAY AT LEAST SOME THIS SEASON. BUT WE FOUND OUT ON TUESDAY THAT THAT APPEAL WAS DENIED. AND BASICALLY, I DON’T AGREE WITH OR UNDERSTAND QUITE FRANKLY, THE DECISION, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE SEVERITY OF THE PUNISHMENT. AND TO ME, THAT’S REALLY DISAPPOINTING. PANEL THAT HEARD THE APPEAL HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY DO SOMETHING, YOU KNOW, MAKE A DECISION THAT TO ME WOULD REFLECT REASON AND ALSO REFLECT THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT. AND, YOU KNOW, THEY FAILED TO DO SO. NOAH SHANNON APOLOGIZED, SAYING, I MADE A MISTAKE AND I HAVE TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. I’M HEARTBROKEN. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY ALONGSIDE MY BROTHERS AGAIN. BUT I PLAN TO STICK WITH THE TEAM AND SUPPORT THEM ANY WAY THAT I CAN GOING FORWARD. FERENTZ SAID THAT SHANNON WILL BE AROUND. HE’S NOT BEEN CRIMINALLY CHARGED FOR THIS SINCE HE TECHNICALLY DID NOT BREAK THE LAW. IOWA
