Today, on what would have been Fred Rogers's 90th birthday, Focus Features has shared the trailer for Won't You Be My Neighbor?, an upcoming documentary from Morgan Neville about the iconic children's TV personality. This clip explains what an unlikely star Rogers was—a man who truly cared about communicating with children.
"Love is at the root of everything," Rogers says in the clip. "What we see and hear on the screen is part of who we become."
His message is important now more than ever to remember in this country. About a year ago, in front of Congress went viral once again as Donald Trump's proposed budget threatened public broadcasting.
On June 8, Won't You Be My Neighbor? will act as another reminder of the values Rogers spent his life promoting. As the film's description describes it:
A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.
Along with that, a Mr. Rogers movie starring Tom Hanks is currently in development based on Tom Junod's for Esquire.
