On busy weeknights, frozen foods can be a healthy, inexpensive, and easy way to feed your family. But after you see what this mother found in her frozen tilapia, you may find yourself avoiding the frozen food section all-together.
A mom in Greenville County, South Carolina found what looked to be a small snake frozen inside a piece of tilapia, according to . The woman bought the tilapia, which is farm-raised in China, at Walmart.
Her daughter was rumbling through the freezer, and then she asked her mom if she had seen the snake. They opened the vacuum-sealed package and were shocked by what they saw on the boneless, skinless piece of tilapia. An aquaponics professor at Clemson University said it was not a snake, but it looked like it could be a nematode or a tapeworm.
The mother went back to Walmart to show them the piece of fish. A manager offered her a refund for the $5 bag, but that wasn't enough. "It wasn't just giving me my money back that was a concern, it was just them doing the right thing," she told . She wants the Fishin Tilapia Fillets, which are "aquaculture practices certified," according to Walmart's website, to be taken off the shelves.
After the incident, Walmart removed the fillets from their online store. The company also released this statement: "We are committed to providing our customers with safe, quality foods. We encourage customers with questions about our products to return to the store and speak with a member of management."
