FIRST. TONIGHT WE START WITH LATE BREAKING NEWS FROM WASHINGTON. SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL FELL AFTER A GOP LUNCH THIS AFTERNOON. A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE 82 YEAR OLD SAID HE HAS A MINOR CUT TO THE FACE AND A SPRAINED WRIST. SENATOR MCCONNELL WAS WITH WYOMING SENATOR JOHN BARRASSO AT THE TIME, WHO IS ALSO A DOCTOR. HE SAID MCCONNELL WALKED BACK TO HIS OFFICE AFTER THE FALL WITH NO ASSISTANCE. MEDICAL STAFF WERE SEEN TAKING A WHEELCHAIR INTO MCCONNELL’S OFFICE MINUTES LATER, BUT HE HAS BEEN CLEARED TO RESUME HIS SCHEDULE. MCCONNELL WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH A CONCUSSION IN MARCH OF LAST YEAR AFTER FALLING IN A HOTEL. HE IS STEPPING DOWN FROM HIS LEADERSHIP POST AT THE END OF THE YEAR. SOUTH DAKOTA SENAT

The incident happened after he participated in the vote to confirm Scott Turner as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

“Senator McConnell is fine,” his spokesman David Popp said.

The office sent a statement after the former GOP leader, who suffered from childhood polio, stumbled on a small series of steps exiting the Senate.

“The lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his regular schedule of work,” Popp said.

McConnell was using a wheelchair as a precautionary measure at the Capitol.
