Meryl Streep seeks apology from Chanel, Lagerfeld after dress drama
Meryl Streep is pushing back against drama surrounding her fashion choices for the Oscars this year.
Not long after Karl Lagerfeld accused her of only wearing a dress made by a fashion line that would pay her to do so, Streep issued a statement,
"Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication,” said Streep, who is nominated for Best Actress for her role in “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
The iconic actress even placed the word controversy in quotes.
“[T]he story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars on the occasion of my record-breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience,” she continued.
Lagerfeld’s accusation, which was made public on Women’s Wear Daily, focused specifically on his notion that after sketching a Chanel design, he was told “Don't continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us," by Streep's team.
After Streep’s statement that insisted it would be against her morals to accept payment for her gown, Chanel issued another statement. The fashion company said they understood that she was still looking around or “considering options” but that when Ms. Streep chose a dress from another designer, they were not given a direct reason as to why.
Streep, however, is still demanding an apology from both Lagerfeld and Chanel.
"I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld's generic 'statement' of regret for this 'controversy' was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting."
