If your plan to shed a few pounds was to team up with a male friend or significant other, and to follow a low calorie food plan together, then you might want to think again. According to a 2018 study, in these circumstances men are more likely to lose weight at a faster pace, which could potentially cause de-motivation for you.The research, carried out by professors from various universities around the world including the University of Copenhagen and the University of Auckland, was published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. Researchers took just over 2,000 participants — a mix of overweight men and women with pre-diabetes — and instructed them to follow the Cambridge Weight Plan. The Cambridge Weight Plan involved consuming just 810 calories daily, mostly consisting of juices and shakes. As well as that, participants ate 375 grams of low-calorie vegetables each day, such as tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce. After eight weeks on the plan, the results revealed that the men on the diet had lost, on average, more weight than the women. Men lost an average of 26 pounds, whereas women lost around 22 pounds. Although the scientists wouldn't be able to speak for all methods of weight loss available, what they did conclude was that on this particular low-calorie diet plan, men shed weight more quickly than the women. And that wasn't the only benefit for men that outweighed the women's results. The male participants in the trial also reduced their body fat by greater amounts than their female counterparts, and lowered their blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) at a quicker rate. All in all, it seemed that men's bodies may respond more quickly to this kind of diet overhaul than women's.
