THIS INVESTIGATION STARTED BACK IN OCTOBER. YEAH, JODI. THAT’S WHEN FIRST RESPONDERS WERE FIRST CALLED TO THE AT HOME DAYCARE. WHEN THEY GOT THERE, THEY SAW THEY THEY FOUND THE FOUR MONTH OLD BABY BOY UNRESPONSIVE. HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO A DES MOINES HOSPITAL WHERE HE DIED FOUR DAYS LATER. TODAY, MELISSA HANCOCK WAS CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER AS SHE TURNED HERSELF IN THIS MORNING AT 730. POLICE SAY THERE WERE NINE KIDS AT MELISSA HANCOCK’S INDIANOLA HOME ON OCTOBER 8TH, WHEN THEY GOT A CALL ABOUT AN UNRESPONSIVE BABY. INDIANOLA POLICE CHIEF BRIAN SHER SAYS THE FOUR MONTH OLD BABY DIED IN THE HOSPITAL FOUR DAYS LATER. FROM THERE, IT LED TO AN INVESTIGATION INTO INJURIES THAT WERE OBSERVED ON THE INFANT. COURT DOCUMENTS FILED WEDNESDAY SAY HE SUFFERED A SKULL FRACTURE, RETINAL HEMORRHAGING AND SPINAL TRAUMA. POLICE SAY THAT’S CONSISTENT WITH BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA. THE REPORT ALSO STATES MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS FOUND NEW AND HEALING INJURIES TO THE BABY, WHICH LED INVESTIGATORS TO BELIEVE THERE WAS A PATTERN OF PRIOR ABUSE. OFFICERS WROTE, QUOTE, TEXT MESSAGES FROM HANCOCK EXPRESSED IRRITATION WITH THE VICTIM, AND HER ACTIONS SHOW CALLOUS DISREGARD FOR HIS WELL-BEING. HANCOCK’S DAYCARE WAS NOT REGISTERED WITH THE STATE AT THE TIME. SHER SAYS THERE’S NO EVIDENCE OF MORE ABUSE AMONG OTHER CHILDREN IN HER CARE. I’M REALLY CONCERNED. NOW HANCOCK WAS WAS BOOKED INTO THE WARREN COUNTY JAIL HERE IN INDIANOLA. HER BOND WAS SET AT HALF $1 MILLION, BUT THEN LOWERED TO JUST $100,000. SHE BAILED OUT AROUND NOON TODAY. Melissa Hancock, 51, turned herself in to authorities Wednesday morning.The investigation began on Oct. 8, when first responders were called to Hancock's home for an unresponsive infant. The baby was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines, where he passed away four days later.Court documents reveal the infant suffered a skull fracture, retinal hemorrhaging, and spinal trauma, injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma. Medical professionals also identified both new and healing injuries, suggesting a pattern of prior abuse. Investigators noted text messages from Hancock expressing irritation with the baby and described her actions as showing "callous disregard for his wellbeing."At the time of the incident, Hancock's day care was not registered with the state. Chief Sher stated there is no evidence of abuse involving other children in her care.Neighbors Ralph and Sonja Blackman, who live across the street from Hancock's home, expressed their shock and concern.
