Maya McBuckets: UNI basketball star making the most of her final season
BETTER, BETTER WAY TO DESCRIBE THAT. ALL RIGHT, HEY, LET’S TALK ABOUT MAYA MCDERMOTT. WELL KNOWN ACROSS THE STATE AND THE COUNTRY. THE UNI POINT GUARD HERE, WE KNOW FROM JOHNSTON, HIGH STATE CHAMP, NOW A SUPERSTAR AT UNI. YEAH. HER STATS FLY OFF THE CHART. I ACTUALLY CAUGHT UP WITH MAYA AND SHE TOLD ME ABOUT A PIECE OF HER LIFE THAT YOU REALLY CAN’T JUST LOOK UP. WELL, I MEAN, ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS WATCH HER UNI HEAD COACH TANYA WARREN CALLS POINT GUARD MAYA MCDERMOTT, A GAMER. THE FORMER STATE CHAMP FROM JOHNSTON IS AVERAGING A CAREER HIGH 19 POINTS AND FIVE ASSISTS WHILE SHOOTING 45% FROM THE FLOOR. IF THE BALL IS IN MAYA’S HAND AND THERE’S FIVE FOUR AND SHE HAS IT AT HALF AND SHE GETS A GOOD LOOK, IT’S GOING IN, YOU CAN BET ON IT. IT’S GOING IN. MAYA IS SHOOTING 92% FROM THE FREE THROW LINE, WHICH IS GOOD FOR SIXTH IN THE COUNTRY. SHE TELLS ME SHE HAS A VERY SPECIFIC ROUTINE BEFORE SHE EVEN SHOOTS. SO WHEN SHE’S LOCKED IN MENTALLY, SHE’S A LOCK FROM THE LINE. IT’S LIKE I’M DOWN LOOKING DOWN ONE LEG, SEE MY LEFT HAND ONE, TWO, THREE. PAUSE. LOOK UP MONEY. I MEAN, THAT’S JUST IT. EVERY TIME I CAN’T LOOK UP SOONER, I HAVE TO DO MY HAND. GRACE BOFFELI TROLLS ME ALL THE TIME. SHE’S LIKE, IT’S SO FUNNY WATCHING. I MEAN, WHEN YOU’RE WATCHING, YOU DON’T KNOW. BUT THEY ALL KNOW I HAVE LIKE A SPECIFIC ROUTINE. AND YOU COULD SAY THAT THAT HELPS ME OUT. YOU KNOW, STICKING WITH IT. HER AGGRESSIVENESS COMES FROM HER BROTHERS GROWING UP WITH TWO OLDER BROTHERS. THEY DID NOT TAKE IT EASY ON ME. THEY STILL DON’T. THEY STILL TALK A LOT OF --, BUT JUST, YOU KNOW, HAVING MY HUSTLE IS FROM THEM, HONESTLY. BORN IN GUATEMALA, MAYA WAS ADOPTED INTO THE MCDERMOTT FAMILY WHEN SHE WAS JUST 11 MONTHS OLD. SO THOSE ARE NOT MY BIOLOGICAL BROTHERS. BUT I DO HAVE A BIOLOGICAL SISTER THAT WAS ADOPTED FROM ANOTHER FAMILY. MAYA’S BIOLOGICAL OLDER SISTER, MARIA, ALSO BORN IN GUATEMALA, GREW UP 15 MINUTES AWAY FROM MAYA IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FAMILY. SHE WAS ADOPTED TO A FAMILY. HER MOM’S NAME IS KIM AND THEN I WAS ADOPTED TO ANOTHER FAMILY. WE ENDED UP BOTH LIVING IN IOWA, SO MY DAD, MIKE, KNOWS KIM SO WE KNOW EACH OTHER. WE WERE JUST ADOPTED INTO TWO DIFFERENT FAMILIES. YEAH, CRAZIEST THING EVER. PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THAT ABOUT ME. WHILE MARIA ISN’T A BALLER LIKE MAYA, THE SISTERS ARE CLOSER THAN EVER. WE HAVE A MATCHING ADOPTION TATTOOS, LIKE BOTH OF OUR MOMS ARE LIKE, NO TATTOOS. AND THEN WE JUST GO GET THEM TOGETHER. SO IT’S FUNNY. MCDERMOTT IS PLAYING IN HER LAST SEASON AT UNI. HONESTLY, IT LEAVES ME PRETTY EMOTIONAL, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I’VE BEEN HERE FIVE YEARS AND IT’S COMING TO AN END. I HATE TO THINK ABOUT IT LIKE THAT, BUT YOU KNOW, YOU CAN’T TAKE ANY MOMENT FOR GRANTED. I LOVE HER, I LOVE HER, I LOVE HER, I LOVE HER, AND I HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT GOES ON ON THE BASKETBALL FLOOR. SHE IS A SPECIAL YOUNG LADY AND SHE HAS MAD
