New plot details have been revealed for 'Mary Poppins Returns'

The Banks children are all grown up in Depression-era London.

Early plot details for Mary Poppins Returns have just been released, and we're basically already crying. The sequel, which just started filming in the UK, will pick up a couple of decades after the 1964 original in 1930s Depression-era London. The story focuses on the now-grown Banks kids, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer), who realize – just like their father did in the original film – that it's not just children who need a magical nanny every now and then. Michael and his three children live with their housekeeper (Julie Walters) on Cherry Tree Lane, the same street where the Banks clan lived in the original film. "After Michael suffers a personal loss," reports Variety, "the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Lin Manuel-Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives." She'll also introduce the Banks family to "to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy". Topsy is played by Meryl Streep, because this film has a ridiculously flawless cast. Emily Blunt is taking over the iconic role of Mary Poppins from Julie Andrews, while Dick Van Dyke will return – but in a very different role from his lovable chimney sweep Bert. Instead, Van Dyke will play the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, Mr Dawes Jr, alongside Colin Firth as the bank's president William Weatherall Wilkins. Based on Mary Poppins, we can probably assume that these bankers are not to be trusted. Mary Poppins Returns is set for release on December 25, 2018.
