Actor Mark Wahlberg made a visit to Des Moines on Thursday afternoon, promoting his fitness line at the new downtown Hy-Vee, formally known as Fourth + Court Hy-Vee, at 420 Court Ave. which is set to open Tuesday in one of the most anticipating store openings in years.

鈥淲e love the fact that (Hy-Vee) is employee-owned and the commitment they show to us,鈥 Wahlberg said, as he toured the roughly 36,000-square-foot store.

It鈥檚 smaller than flagship Hy-Vee stores, but it showcases a wide variety of groceries, drinks and restaurant-style foods such as hibachi, Tex-Mex, charcuterie meats and cheeses, bread-making, seafood and Italian street food, smoothies and classic soda -- to name a few.

鈥淭his is a new department we added in the last several stores,鈥 said Randy Edeker, chief executive officer. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the New York deli.鈥

In order to create the specialty stations, Edeker said, store officials had to fly teams across the country to learn about authentic food.

鈥淲e think this will be a fun place to come be a part of the whole food climate down here,鈥 he said.

Like many other Hy-Vee stores, the Court Avenue location will feature a Market Grille for a dine-in experience.

Customers can also find a massive temperature-controlled wine cooler.

鈥淭his is one of the few that鈥檚 able to do cans,鈥 Edeker said.

The store features a cold beer growler station.

鈥淚 think you鈥檒l have some folks that come in and it鈥檒l be different than they expected,鈥 Edeker said. 鈥淚 think they鈥檒l expect it to be a traditional grocery store.鈥

But it鈥檚 far from such, as store officials focused on a more urban design to attract downtown Des Moines residents and workers.

鈥淭his is at the top of the bucket list,鈥 said Christine Hensley, of the Des Moines City Council. 鈥淚 think it will really become a destination for people in the metro area.鈥

Hensley said she believes the new Hy-Vee location will be good competition for the Court Avenue scene.

鈥淚f you鈥檝e got lots of different options in an area, that benefits the whole area,鈥 she said.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not really worried or focused on trying to hurt any other restaurants or anything like that,鈥 Edeker added. 鈥淲e just want to have a store that reflects the lifestyles of the downtown urban setting.鈥

The grand opening is set for 6 a.m. Tuesday.
